The CarGurus verdict

Following a major update for the 2025 model year, the Ram 2500 heavy-duty pickup truck rolls into 2026 with a few noteworthy updates and an intriguing new pair of trim levels.

Big, expensive and hard to park in urban confines, but absolutely necessary for a sizable number of buyers who require their stout powertrains and serious capability, heavy-duty trucks such as the Ram 2500 are designed to work hard.

Verdict: Ram has a solid lineup of trucks for all pickup buyers. From off-road enthusiasts to long-haul truckers towing huge loads from one end of the country to the other, there’s a heavy-duty Ram pickup designed for every need. And if you require the biggest interior with a cargo bed attached, the Ram Mega Cab is the truck you’re looking for.

Look & feel

8/10

Loud, proud, and full of attitude, the heavy-duty Ram 2500 wears a massive, upright grille, tall, slab-sided bodywork, and enough ride height—particularly when equipped with four-wheel drive (4WD)—that side steps should be considered mandatory. How well the truck’s exterior is finished depends on the trim level. A base Ram 2500 Tradesman is intended to serve as a no-frills workhorse, and its plain matte plastic grille and black steel wheels bear that out. The Big Horn model adds eye-catching chrome to dress things up a bit.

New for 2026 is the Ram 2500 Black Express trim level, as seen in the pictures accompanying this review. Designed to give off a street-oriented sporty flair, it is offered solely in the four-door Crew Cab bodystyle, with rear-wheel drive (RWD) or 4WD, and with either a short 6'4" bed or an 8' bed. Included in the Black Express package is a Sport Performance Hood that blends very well into the body-color grille surround but reduces forward visibility much more than we’d like, 20-inch black wheels, and black tubular side steps. Inside is a comfortable front bench seat with a massive fold-down center portion that also serves as a storage console, upholstered in black cloth.

The other new-for-2026 trim level is the Ram 2500 Warlock, which is available only with a Crew Cab, a short bed, and 4WD, and is aimed at the off-road crowd. The Warlock wears unique exterior decals paired with a black grille surround, fender flares and bumpers, along with 20-inch diamond-cut wheels shod in 34-inch Goodyear Duratrac all-terrain tires. An anti-spin rear differential, Bilstein shock absorbers, a transfer case skid plate and hill descent control further enhance off-road capability. Like the Black Express, the Warlock’s interior is upholstered in black cloth.

The bread-and-butter Laramie carries on for 2026 with all of the creature comforts plush truck owners have come to expect, as do the Rebel and Power Wagon off-roaders. At the top of the 2500 range are the luxurious Limited and Limited Longhorn, both of which offer high-end leather interiors with varying finishes.

Performance

8/10

The base engine in all Ram 2500 models remains a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 that produces a more-than-adequate 405 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque. The big Power Wagon is the only version of the Ram 2500 lineup that doesn’t offer an optional 6.7-liter Cummins turbocharged diesel engine (but that will change for 2027). With 430 hp and a truly impressive 1,075 lb-ft of torque, the Cummins inline-six is an extremely popular upgrade—more than two-thirds of Ram HD buyers opt for the diesel. An eight-speed automatic transmission accompanies both engines.

Despite all that pavement-pounding torque, the Cummins-powered Ram 2500 doesn’t rocket off the line. The diesel engine’s comparatively low redline, coupled with the fact that each of the eight-speed transmission shifts suspends power as it moves between ratios, means the Hemi-powered truck feels quicker around town. Buyers who need to haul heavy loads will care a lot more about the diesel’s 20,000-pound maximum tow rating, although the maximum payload rating of 3,940 pounds is achieved with the gasoline Hemi.

For serious off-roaders, the Power Wagon has electronic locking front and rear differentials and a disconnecting front sway bar. Drivers who plan to stick to the pavement, however, should test drive a Ram 2500 fitted with the optional air suspension, which smooths out the ride and keeps the truck level even when heavily loaded.

Form & function

9/10

Most Ram 2500 buyers will benefit from a roomy Crew Cab with four large doors and plenty of room for adult-size passengers, as this cab is available on the widest array of trim levels. Tradesman and Big Horn buyers can choose a two-door Regular Cab with an 8' bed if they don’t need a rear seat, and for buyers looking for the stretch limo of the truck world, there is the Mega Cab—a stretched Crew Cab that’s a Ram specialty.

With so many sizes, trim levels, and options, it’s possible for buyers to choose anything from a down-and-dirty work truck with vinyl seats and floor mats to leather-swathed pickups with 17-speaker audio systems with 900 watts of power and active noise cancellation. Laramie models strike a desirable balance of luxurious trimmings—including leather seats in either black or two-tone brown—at comparatively reasonable prices. Limited models get Ultra Premium leather in black or red and the more Western-themed Limited Longhorn boasts Premium Filigree Leather bucket seats in a fashionable shade of brown.

Technology

8/10

Ram 2500 trucks are equipped with one of three infotainment screens. Tradesman, Black Express, Warlock and Big Horn models come standard with an 8.4-inch touchscreen display, while Power Wagon, Rebel and Laramie trucks get a larger 12-inch unit (the mid-size 12-incher can be optioned in lower trim levels with various packages), and top-shelf trucks have a mammoth 14.4-inch touchscreen that dominates the center of the dashboard.

Ram’s Uconnect 5 software is standard and features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, while built-in navigation is optional. Also available is a 10.25-inch touchscreen on the passenger side that gives front-seat occupants access to their own media and entertainment options.

A 12-inch digital instrument cluster is also standard, starting with the Laramie grade. It can display the likes of navigation directions, vehicle dynamics settings, and diagnostics. Trucks optioned with one of Ram’s tow packages can also show Trailer Tow Pages that offer status updates on the likes of the attached trailer's lights, tires, or brakes. A digital rear-view mirror is optional, and can display several different camera views, while the available surround-view camera system gives the driver a bird’s eye view of the truck’s surroundings.

Safety

6/10

Ram offers a solid number of active safety technologies, but most are packaged as part of an optional Safety Group, surprisingly even on high-end models costing well over $50,000.

Adaptive steering, automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, and lane-keep assist are all part of the Safety Group package. Blind-spot monitors with conventional trailer coverage, pedestrian detection, and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on Power Wagon, Rebel, Laramie, Limited, and Limited Longhorn trucks, but optional on Tradesman, Black Express, Warlock, and Big Horn trucks. Ram’s ParkSense parking sensor package is optional on Tradesman, Black Express, and Warlock, but standard on all other trim levels. Adaptive cruise control, however, is standard across the board. Other available safety tech includes a rear-seat reminder alert, a driver-attention monitor, and traffic-sign recognition.

The 2026 Ram 2500 received a four-star (out of five) overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in Crew Cab spec. It received four stars in the frontal-crash test category, five stars in side crash testing, and three stars in the rollover test. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) hadn’t released safety ratings for the Ram 2500 at the time of writing.

Cost-effectiveness

7/10

Ram 2500 prices for 2026 start at $46,855 plus a massive $2,595 in destination charges (that’s $500 more than in 2025) to bring the total MSRP to $49,450 for a base Tradesman regular cab with RWD. Adding 4WD puts the price at $52,380, but that’s in line with other heavy-duty trucks. The most basic Ford F-250 Super Duty starts at $48,770 and the Chevy Silverado 2500 HD starts at $48,695 in basic Work Truck (WT) form.

The Cummins turbocharged diesel engine that more than half of all Ram HD truck buyers choose adds $12,995 and requires a Crew Cab body. That brings the starting price to $66,065 in Tradesman trim. The Big Horn—the next rung on the trim-level ladder—costs about $4,000 more than the Tradesman, and prices go up from there.

We tested a 2026 Ram 2500 Crew Cab with the diesel engine in Black Express trim that was not extravagantly optioned, and it wore a sticker price of $74,505. That’s compared to a starting price of $55,665 for the Black Express with the Hemi V8. Ram’s popular 2500 Power Wagon off-road special starts at $75,845 and the top-shelf Limited and Limited Longhorn duo start at $77,500 with RWD or $80,140 with 4WD.

Ram is the only manufacturer to offer an extra-large cab in 2026. But the Ram 2500 Mega Cab also has an extra-large base price of $82,345. The princely sum makes more sense considering that it’s only offered in Laramie, Limited, and Limited Longhorn trim levels with 4WD and the Cummins diesel engine. There’s no way around it—big trucks cost big money.
