The 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLE adheres too strictly to the automaker’s original luxury crossover SUV recipe.
Mercedes introduced the ML-Class in the late 1990s—a blobby-looking luxury SUV focused on on-road comfort. Almost 30 years later, the GLE—the ML’s replacement—follows that model’s founding formula but with modern powertrains and technology. The 2026 GLE-Class is available in standard and “coupe” body styles equipped with four-, six-, and eight-cylinder engines. For the 2026 model year, the six-cylinder GLE 450 features a standard AMG Line exterior design and there's a new Manufaktur Edition.
Verdict: The midsize Mercedes GLE is the second most popular model the company sells in the U.S. (behind the smaller GLC crossover SUV). That’s easy to understand, given consumer preferences for SUVs and the GLE’s overall appeal. Still, it is time for Mercedes to redesign this model.
There are 10 versions of the 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLE available for the 2026 model year, ranging from $63,600 to $134,500, including a $1,350 destination charge. It's assembled in Alabama, and the least-expensive model is the GLE 350 with rear-wheel drive (RWD) and a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. At more than twice the price, buyers can park an AMG GLE 63 S Coupe in their multi-car garage, equipped with standard 4Matic all-wheel drive (AWD) and a hand-built twin-turbo V8 engine.
For the sake of simplicity, this review focuses on the standard GLE body style, not the GLE Coupe. Our test vehicle arrived in GLE 450 spec featuring a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine and mild-hybrid technology. There is also a GLE 450e model, but that’s a turbo-four plug-in hybrid that offers 49 miles of estimated electric-only range before burning a drop of gasoline.
All GLEs have standard AWD except the base GLE 350. In addition, our GLE 450 had the Exclusive Package and the new-for-2026 Manufaktur Edition Package. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) was $79,100, including the destination charge.
The Manufaktur Edition upgrade includes exclusive paint, 21-inch wheels, a Night Package with blacked-out trim, Mercedes star pattern logo projection after dark, a panoramic sunroof, Nappa premium leather, and the Driver Assistance Package. Since that last item costs almost $2,000 when ordered separately, the total Manufaktur Edition Package price of $4,000 seems like a bargain.
Unfortunately, the test vehicle’s Moonlight White Magno paint simply magnified the GLE’s egg-on-wheels styling. Usually, we don’t like SUV coupes, but we make an exception when it comes to the GLE. The GLE Coupe’s swoopy roofline dramatically improves the design.
If the exterior is bland and boring, the interior is anything but. Elegantly detailed and crafted with quality materials, the GLE 450 boasts a lovely cabin. Matte-finish wood, splashes of metallic bling, soothing ambient lighting, sophisticated digital displays arranged in a landscape orientation, and a classy looking steering wheel make it clear this is a luxury SUV.
Mercedes wisely separates the climate controls from the center touchscreen. Touch-sensing controls cover the steering wheel spokes, and they work reasonably well. We never inadvertently adjusted or activated a feature, but found it hard to fine-tune stereo volume using the touch slider. Fortunately, there is a volume thumbwheel on the center console, which is what we used most of the time.
Working with a mild-hybrid system, the 2026 GLE 450’s turbocharged, 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine generates 375 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, fed to the wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission. Drivers can choose between Eco, Comfort, Sport, Off-Road, and Individual driving modes.
Unexpectedly for a luxury crossover, the GLE 450 is fortified for off-roading and for towing substantial loads. The towing capacity is a stout 7,700 pounds—a competitive figure for a midsize pickup truck, let alone a luxury vehicle. Our test vehicle also had Downhill Speed Regulation, an off-road data panel with readouts for the likes of pitch and roll, and a “transparent hood” camera view to help see terrain immediately in front of or under the front of the vehicle.
We performed neither task during our time with the GLE 450. Instead, we used it as most owners will, running local errands, shuttling teenagers, and commuting on freeways. While the GLE should excel in these areas, it doesn’t. Not with its standard suspension, anyway.
Our test vehicle did not include the optional Airmatic adaptive-damping air suspension. Instead, it had the standard “selective” damping setup that is supposed to adjust based on the road surface and your driving style. Our impressions are that it allows too much unwanted body motion in pretty much all driving situations.
In the city, it feels too soft and allows excessive lateral rocking as it wallows down the street. At higher speeds on mountain roads, mid-curve pavement imperfections unsettle the GLE, while bumps and dips cause bouncing and more lateral rocking. It’s not much fun on a mountain road, either, and the AMG styling and 21-inch wheels write checks the chassis can’t cash.
In Comfort mode, the steering feels numb and overassisted, and exhibits an irritating desire to return to center. Switch to Dynamic mode and things firm up, but it remains anesthetized and interested in traveling only in a straight line. At least the gorgeous steering wheel feels good in your hands.
Mercedes also equips the GLE 450 with a sport braking system. When driving with enthusiasm in the Santa Monica Mountains near Los Angeles, the brakes resisted fade, shudder, and overheating. However, in typical driving situations such as stop-and-go traffic, they feel grabby and hard to modulate for smooth stops. The transmission’s evident downshifts as you bring the GLE to a halt don’t help.
Press the accelerator pedal after a traffic light turns green, and it takes a moment for the automatic engine stop/start system to reignite the turbo-six, and for the engine to then respond to your request for acceleration. When it does, it can lurch forward and deliver uneven power at low speed. The transmission also delays downshifts, so while there’s plenty of power, accessing it is another matter.
The GLE is at least an agreeable long-distance road tripper, thanks to its quiet cabin and decent fuel economy. According to the EPA, buyers can expect to get 21 mpg in combined driving from a GLE 450, and we matched that exactly on our Southern California testing loop. Ratings vary for other models, but the availability of the GLE 450e plug-in hybrid is also a plus.
In addition to its hushed nature at freeway speeds, the GLE’s front seats are firm, but comfortable. They’re heated, feature “energizing seat kinetics” to help reduce fatigue on long trips, and ensure a proper driving position behind the power-adjustable steering wheel. Our test vehicle’s Exclusive Package added ventilated front seats, and the Manufaktur Edition Package swapped the standard MB-Tex artificial leather for genuine Nappa hides.
The GLE’s back seat is roomy and comfortable, but we thought the seating position was too low relative to the window sills. This is necessary to ensure a flat load floor when folding the seat down to accommodate extra cargo, but can make a passenger feel as though they’ve shrunk by several inches. Still, you can’t complain about the extra headroom or the generous legroom and foot room. The back seat is also properly shaped to provide good leg support and a comfortable backrest angle.
A third-row seat is an expensive option for the GLE. It adds two extra chairs with USB-C charging ports, bundled with power-adjustable second-row seats. Since the three-row Mercedes-Benz GLS starts at more than $90,000, buyers might be tempted to add the third-row seat to the GLE, especially if you plan to use it only occasionally.
Mercedes provides thoughtful storage throughout the GLE's cabin, plus a cover for the wireless charging pad and cupholders when they’re not in use. Open the power rear liftgate and the GLE reveals 33.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back seat. Maximum cargo volume measures 74.9 cubic feet with the 40/20/40-split back seat folded down.
The cargo area includes a netted compartment to the left, robust hooks on both sides, lighting, and a cargo cover. Under the load floor you’ll find a large spare tire and some hidden storage space.
In the 2026 GLE, the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system runs on a 12.3-inch digital driver display and a 12.3-inch touchscreen that live side-by-side. Conservative in comparison to the Superscreen and Hyperscreen treatments in some Mercedes models, we nevertheless like the relative simplicity of the GLE’s setup. Chalk that up to screen fatigue.
Both displays offer lush graphics and a range of configurations, with minimal reflections. A biometric authentication system can load a saved user profile, and the native digital voice assistant turned in a nearly flawless performance during testing. The only problem we encountered was in response to this urgent request: “Hey Mercedes, I need to go to a hospital!” The list of “hospitals” included medical facilities that were not, in fact, hospitals.
The Exclusive Package adds a sensational Burmester surround-sound audio system, Dolby Atmos technology, and an augmented-reality video function for the native navigation. That sounds like a feature buyers would use once or twice to show off to friends and family, but we found it genuinely useful and worth the extra expense.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are, predictably, standard equipment. The GLE also features SiriusXM satellite radio and one year of complimentary access to Mercedes Digital Extras (connected services). The Exclusive Package adds Online Music Streaming, and we made liberal use of its Apple Music integration.
The GLE’s standard safety tech is limited for an expensive luxury SUV. The standard equipment list includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, a safe-exit assist system, and automatic high-beam headlights. Also standard is Pre-Safe Sound, a feature unique to Mercedes. It emits a specific tone just as an impact occurs in order to protect occupants' eardrums and hearing during a collision.
Mercedes also equips the GLE with several parking aids, including front and rear sensors, a surround-view camera system, and a semi-automated parking system.
Many features are reserved for the $1,950 Driver Assistance Package, which adds adaptive cruise control, lane-keep and centering assist, evasive steering assist, front cross-traffic braking assist, and other functions related to automatic speed management based on road signs, curves, and following distances.
One feature we always like to mention is the GLE’s Active Emergency Stop Assist, which is also part of the Driver Assistance Package. If you fall asleep or suffer a medical emergency and become unresponsive while using the adaptive cruise control, this technology will automatically bring the GLE to a stop and activate the hazard flashers. Another noteworthy feature is the touch-sensing steering wheel rim, which eliminates the need for the driver to make regular steering inputs to tell the car they’re still paying attention.
The driver aids aren’t perfect, though. The route-based speed-adjustment feature, which automatically slows the GLE for curves, highway interchanges, and freeway exits, was a non-stop source of aggravation. Not only did it decelerate too much for curves, but when exiting onto a very long and typically high-speed exit ramp, it also suddenly slowed by 10 mph before we intervened to override it. Later, on a freeway with a winding multi-lane mountain grade, constant braking and acceleration forced us to cancel use of the adaptive cruise control until we reached the top of the pass. Worse, we never stumbled upon a control setting for the speed-adjustment feature while rummaging around in the MBUX menus, and were unable to turn it off.
The automated lane-change assist function behaved inconsistently, too. Otherwise, the driver aids worked well on the different roads and highways we use for evaluation. Drivers are occasionally aware of the tech’s activity, but aside from the complaints above, it operates in a refined and sophisticated manner.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had not given the Mercedes GLE a safety rating at the time of writing. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named the GLE a “Top Safety Pick+” for the 2025 calendar year—its highest safety award—but its front-crash prevention tech earned low ratings.
The 2026 Mercedes GLE’s base price is roughly mid-pack. The GLE starts below the Audi Q8, the BMW X5, the Lexus GX, and the Porsche Cayenne, but costs more than the Acura MDX, the Genesis GV80, the Lexus RX, and the Lincoln Nautilus. The Volvo XC90 costs a little less than the GLE, and also boasts a standard third-row seat and two years of free scheduled maintenance.
Mercedes offers its customers a four-year/50,000-mile warranty with free roadside assistance, and a limited subscription to its connected services. Some competitors provide more added value than that, including complimentary scheduled service. In addition to Volvo, you get free dealer visits with Audi, BMW, Genesis, and Lexus. The GLE doesn’t hold its value over time as well as some rivals, either, and Acura, Lexus, and Porsche consistently perform best in this regard.
Mercedes-Benz knows its customers have long aspired to own a vehicle decorated with the vaunted three-pointed star, so it might not feel as compelled to provide extra value to make the sale. Besides, the GLE is a likeable luxury SUV despite its bland styling and our impression that it’s time for a complete redesign. But if we were buying one, we’d definitely get a model with air suspension.
