The 2026 Buick Envista is a fast fashion small SUV.
Offering great looks and good practicality at a bargain price, the Envista will last longer than something bought on a whim at H&M or Zara, but it has that same aura of affordable style. For the 2026 Envista, Buick takes the concept a step further with the new Studio Series Package. Based on the mid-level Sport Touring trim, the Studio Series emphasizes style with extra substance.
Verdict: The Envista’s appealing design sets up expectations that the inexpensively trimmed interior and unrewarding driving dynamics can’t meet. Fortunately, the price tag reflects reality. If Buick improved the safety ratings, the Envista would be easy to recommend, despite its flaws.
Buick sells the 2026 Envista in Preferred, Sport Touring, and Avenir trim levels, with prices ranging from $26,495 to $31,295, including a $1,795 destination charge that is $500 more than when our test car was built. Our Envista Sport Touring Studio Series test vehicle had no additional options and wore a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $31,855, including destination. Configured today, that same vehicle would cost $32,355.
We don’t know if SUV coupes are now common enough that they’re no longer controversial, or if Buick’s design team was just firing on all cylinders the day it drafted the Envista’s styling, but this little crossover looks terrific. The Ceramic paint that comes with the Studio Series Package wouldn’t be a first choice for us, but in alignment with fast-fashion tenets, it is trendy.
The interior is equally handsome at first glance, but it doesn’t take long to realize why the Envista is so affordable. Even for an entry-level model, the plastic, the fake leather, the hard seats, and the overall lack of refinement put the price into perspective.
Examples of cheapness include the thunking noise the center armrest makes when drivers lift their arms off of it, the sickly snapping sound the turn signal stalk makes, and how the transmission shifter feels loose and emits unpleasant noises when selecting a gear. These flaws consistently remind drivers that they bought an affordable car, not a premium car.
The Envista’s underlying engineering also aligns with its price tag. It’s available only with a turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine, coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission. And while Buick markets the Envista as a crossover SUV, it’s not available with all-wheel drive (AWD)—front-wheel drive (FWD) is all buyers get.
Output (if we could call it that) measures 137 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 162 pound-feet of torque at 2,500 rpm, and the Envista’s base curb weight is 3,137 pounds without any occupants. That makes for a car that is slow and, as it turns out, not very fuel-efficient, likely because the engine is always working overtime.
Turbocharging helps in the city and the suburbs. There is a delay when drivers press on the accelerator pedal, followed by a surge of torque when the turbo starts to do its thing. Unlike with a Mazda turbocharged engine, the transition between no response and too much response isn’t smooth and can take drivers by surprise.
The turbo lag makes it harder to hang a left through small gaps in oncoming vehicles and to take advantage of holes in traffic during the daily commute. And the utter lack of horsepower at higher revs makes it difficult to switch lanes to pass slower vehicles.
Over more than 300 miles of travel, our Envista test car averaged 28.1 mpg, falling short of the official EPA rating of 30 mpg combined. On our usual evaluation route, which is mountainous, the Buick averaged 25.7 mpg, but on a separate 30-mile fuel-economy evaluation loop with only a driver aboard, the Envista returned 30.5 mpg.
One blessing with this drivetrain is the six-speed automatic. The engine works hard, and if the Envista had a continuously variable transmission (CVT), it would likely produce a lot of steady-state droning as the Buick struggled up to speed. Another positive dynamic trait is the cornering grip of the Sport Touring Studio Series model’s 19-inch wheels and tires.
That’s where the praise ends. The steering provides no feel for the road, and steering responses are imprecise, so it’s really hard to make small, fine-tuned inputs. The brakes are equally rudimentary. Pedal feel, response, and modulation remind us of how rear drum brakes behave, even though the Envista has rear discs.
The Studio Series upgrade jettisons the Sport Touring trim level’s basic torsion-beam rear suspension design in favor of the Avenir trim level’s more sophisticated Watts link setup, but the ride quality remains unsettled, especially with four people on board.
Supposedly, the Envista features Buick’s “QuietTuning”. Maybe it’s not as noisy inside as its platform-mate, the Chevrolet Trax, but it definitely isn’t quiet inside, either. Road racket and ambient environmental noise easily seep into the cabin.
Because the Envista sits higher than a typical car, it’s easy to get in and out of. Rear-seat passengers might need to watch the sloping roofline, though.
The standard single-zone automatic climate control is pretty basic, but the air conditioning was flawless during a warm week of summertime testing. Since we earlier compared the Buick unfavorably with Mazda, we’ll say here that Mazda could take some lessons from Buick when it comes to rapid cabin cooling. For cold climates, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel are available on the Preferred and Sport Touring trim levels, and standard on the top-end Avenir.
The front seats are hard and flat, but supportive enough on cross-town drives. Drivers benefit from power adjustment, but the front passenger does not, and anyone riding shotgun might also feel they’re sitting too low in relation to the center armrest. Otherwise, the seat height is acceptable.
Storage space is decent, but the tray and bin surfaces are unlined, so items placed in them will rattle around. Outward visibility is good as long as the driver is looking forward or to the sides. The view through the rear window is compromised by the coupe-like styling and how rapidly dust and dirt accumulate on the window, which doesn’t have a rear wiper.
Rear-seat passengers may find the Envista more accommodating than expected. None of our passengers thought headroom was a problem, despite the low roof, and legroom is generous, too. The rear bench seat is softer than the front buckets and the backrest angle is comfortable, but occupants sit a little low, so leg support is less than ideal, and Buick didn’t include rear air vents.
Rear storage space is acceptable for an entry-level vehicle. There isn’t a center fold-down armrest, so the only beverage holders are the bottle holders molded into the lower door panel bins. There’s a cubby carved into the back of the front console, a couple of USB charging ports (one A, one C), a magazine pocket on the right-front seatback, and small trays in each door armrest.
A power rear liftgate is part of the Studio Series upgrade for the Sport Touring trim. The long liftgate opens really wide, so drivers should be careful in parking garages with low ceilings. There is 20.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats. Fold the 60/40-split rear seat flat, and the Envista holds 42 cubic feet of cargo, a modest number even for a small SUV. It's also possible to store things under the load floor, but the area is unfinished so items could fall into the space beneath the spare tire.
Housed within a single trapezoidal glass surface with stylish rounded corners, an 8-inch digital driver display, and 11-inch touchscreen provide basic functionality.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio with a short complimentary trial subscription, and a Wi-Fi hotspot are standard, and two phones can simultaneously be paired with the infotainment system. Wireless smartphone charging is part of the Studio Series upgrade (and standard on the Avenir trim level) but operates slowly by modern standards. Apple CarPlay, on the other hand, worked flawlessly.
OnStar Basics connected services are free for eight years. That’s a good value, as it provides automatic crash response, remote vehicle access via a smartphone app, and other connected services.
The standard six-speaker audio system sounded adequate, but still low-grade. We’re big fans of the Envista’s stereo volume and radio/track tuning buttons on the back of the steering wheel spokes, though. The volume knob at the upper left corner of the touchscreen display is a tiny little nub that’s hard to grasp, and Buick doesn’t provide a tuning knob, but those steering wheel controls make up for it.
As readers have probably gathered by now, the Buick Envista looks upscale but is equipped with only the basics. That theme extends to its driver-assistance tech.
Standard features include forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, rear parking sensors, and high-beam assist. Also standard is a following distance indicator that measures distance in seconds, which we found to be remarkably effective.
Our test vehicle’s Studio Series Package included the otherwise optional Advanced Safety Package, which adds adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitors, and rear cross-traffic alert. In our opinion, the latter two features should be standard.
The adaptive cruise control responds to variable traffic conditions with relative smoothness and refinement, but Buick doesn’t offer the lane-centering function that many other brands pair with adaptive cruise control. Lane-keep assist still provides a safety net, but we disliked how it reacted on winding stretches of road. We also received some false alarms from the forward collision warning system, but its flashing red lights certainly got our attention.
Buick could improve the Envista in numerous ways, but ultimately, this is an affordable, entry-level vehicle with a low price. Enhancements cost money, and that would make the Envista more expensive. Still, based on its safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), Buick needs to spend some cash on upgrades in this area.
The Envista received a Poor rating from the IIHS for vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention, an Acceptable rating for vehicle-to-pedestrian crash prevention, and a Marginal headlight rating. It also received a Poor rating in the updated moderate overlap front crash test, which emphasizes rear-passenger protection to a greater degree, but got Good ratings in the small overlap front and updated side-impact tests.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) hadn’t released safety ratings for the Envista at the time of writing.
Judged purely from a styling standpoint, the 2026 Buick Envista is a winner. Unfortunately, there isn’t much substance to go with that style. The Envista is slow and unrefined, lacks AWD, and its IIHS safety score chart shows too much red and orange and not enough green.
Compared to a similarly priced Hyundai Kona—or the redesigned Kia Seltos—it’s really hard to recommend the Buick for any reason other than its style. The Hyundai and Kia are both IIHS Top Safety Pick+ winners, exude refinement, are more comfortable, and have far more sophisticated technology. They also boast more impressive warranty coverage and offer AWD.
The Mazda CX-30 is another good alternative. Its design, interior materials, and build quality are truly premium, and it is also a Top Safety Pick+. Better yet, it can accelerate out of its own way, especially with the optional turbocharged engine (although that engine is very thirsty) and has standard AWD.
To maximize fuel economy, the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid and the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid are also available, although neither is as aesthetically pleasing as the Buick.
