The Kia Niro has been around for several years now, and it entered its second generation in the US in 2023. The Niro EV brings a surprisingly reasonable starting price, great interior space, and user-friendly tech. Kia offers the SUV in two configurations and with one powertrain option for 2024, but its price and electric range make it a compelling option in its segment.

What’s New for the 2024 Kia Niro EV

The Kia Niro EV enters 2024 with minimal changes and a small price increase over the year before.

Design

With the latest overhaul, Kia updated the Niro’s design with a more modern front end and sharper styling all around. Its unique headlight design places the light units lower in the front fascia, and top trims add fog lights in the lower grille. The side styling is dramatically different from that of prior versions, with a funky “wing” design on the rear pillars, and the new taillight design mirrors that aesthetic with slim, sharp light units.

Powertrain

Kia offers one powertrain option for the 2024 Niro EV. It employs a single electric motor making 201 horsepower and 188 pound-feet torque. Front-wheel drive (FWD) and a single-speed transmission come standard, and Kia does not offer all-wheel drive (AWD). That modest power number doesn’t deliver thrills, but it offers solid efficiency of up to 113 MPGe (miles per gallon of gasoline equivalent) combined and a range of 253 miles.

Interior

The Niro EV’s interior is as modern and eye-catching as its exterior. Cloth upholstery comes standard, and Kia offers vegan leather as an upgrade. Heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, and a vegan-leather-wrapped steering wheel are also standard. The five-seat Niro unfortunately has below-average cargo space, with only 22.8 cubic feet behind the rear seats.

Technology

Kia equips the 2024 Niro EV with a 10.25-inch touchscreen and a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster, along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other standard tech includes navigation, SiriusXM radio, HD radio, wireless charging, dual-zone climate control, and more. A seven-speaker Harman Kardon sound system is available. Kia’s infotainment interface is not as flashy or complex as many others, but that simplicity makes it a breeze to use while driving. Menus are responsive and easy to understand, and the system offers a long list of features without feeling overly complicated.

Safety

The Niro EV hasn’t been crash-tested yet, but Kia gives it a long list of standard and available driver aids, including blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, driver-attention monitoring, automatic high beams, lane-departure warnings, lane-keep assist, highway driving assist, parking sensors, rear seat warnings, and more.

Pricing

As of this writing, the base 2024 Kia Niro EV Wind trim starts at $39,600, and the top Wave trim starts at $44,600. Kia doesn’t offer many upgrades to drive the price higher, but both trims see a $1,325 destination charge tacked on at the bottom line.

Chose the Niro EV Wave over the Volvo XC40. I like it has... Heat Pump driven A/C, Sunroof, Dual User Settings, Heated and Ventilated Seats, Heated Steering Wheel, Control Center Display, Heads-Up-Display, separate Infotainment Center that makes sense, physical buttons instead of just a single tablet in the center like most cars do now, high efficiency (15 MW/h per 100 km), roomy interior, good looking exterior, Goldilock size between a Subaru Forester and a VW Golf.Jun 03, 2024
