Expert review
The 2023 Mazda CX-5 remains an appealing choice in its segment, but the Mazda CX-50 is the better compact crossover SUV.
The 2023 Mazda CX-5 is living on borrowed time. The current-generation model has been on sale since 2017, and while it still seems fresh as a daisy, seven years is a long time in the automotive world. In addition, aside from a new Rhodium White premium paint option, Mazda makes no other changes to the 2023 CX-5. Furthermore, the CX-5 now lives side-by-side with the Mazda CX-50, and when you consider the existence of the CX-30, the upcoming CX-90, and the rumored CX-70, well, it certainly doesn’t seem as though the CX-5 will remain in Mazda’s lineup for much longer.

What owners say
"Overall, owners of the 2023 Mazda CX-5 appreciate its comfort, performance, and features. Many love the stylish interior with high-quality finishes and a user-friendly heads-up display. The ride quality and handling also receive positive remarks. However, some drivers have noted a downside in fuel economy, which could be a concern for those who drive longer distances."
This was the car my daughter wanted, and I can see why. Sharp exterior, especially the black wheels and trim against the blue/gray paint- it really pops! The interior is just as sharp with loads of features that would cost extra in other manufactures. Engine performance is nice, with sport and normal modes to save gas. She is ecstatic about it so that makes me ecstatic. I talked to many Mazda owners and read lots of reports/reviews. So far, the word on the street about their reliability, performance, presentation, costs, etc... is spot on. I bought a brand new Toyota RAV4 for myself a few months ago. If you are considering an SUV like that, you should also check out the Mazda models. Highly recommend, and I might have bought a Mazda myself if I had known more about them!!
May 17, 2025Love driving this midsized SUV for its superior handling and its peppy motor.
May 16, 2026I had been told to stick to Honda or Toyota for a practical car but I was frustrated having to go higher trims to get my dealbreakers like keyless entry or power seats. I also hadn’t been a fan of SUVs but wanted more cargo space, so I was looking for hatchbacks, but they are so hard to find. Thankfully a friend with this car suggested I try it- I was floored to see how many reasonably priced barely used options I had! And more importantly, the BASE model has everything I could want- keyless entry, power seats, heated seats, a great screen, and so much cargo space. I was comfortable driving this IMMEDIATELY despite never having an SUV. The seats being leather trim with suede centers are truly the best of both worlds. And I could care less than it doesn’t have a touch screen, because the control knob is amazing. I love that the base model has all these perks without a moonroof, which I truly did not want. The only downside I can think of is a less than stellar fuel economy, but I just don’t drive long enough distances for that to be much of a concern for me personally..

January 26, 2024Yes, great value and comes with all of the essentials features! Love the moon roof, red leather interior and stitching, heated seats, 12, Bose speaker sound system , dual climate control, memory seat control, Apple/ Android car play! Best bang for buck on value and features!
August 5, 2023The ride and handling of the vehicle are a delight. The engine performance is responsive. The comfort of the interior is excellent.
August 24, 2023Love all the features of the CX-5, especially the heads up display. I thought it was going to be annoying, but its certainly useful. The fact that cars in your blind spot show up on the display is great. I notice that vefore the indicators on the side view mirrors. It has a smooth and comfortable ride.
October 7, 2023The vehicle is better in person than in the pics
