The BMW X2, a small crossover, enters its third year for 2020. Prime competitors include BMW’s own X1, the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, Volvo XC40, Lexus UX, and Cadillac XT4.
The X2 resembles a lifted hatchback and features a set of 18-inch alloy wheels standard. For more expressive styling, look at the M35i, which gets exclusive aerodynamic styling and 19-inch wheels.
The sDrive28i and xDrive28i get the same engine, a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine, rated for 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It pairs with an 8-speed automatic transmission that includes sport and manual shift modes. The sDrive28i features front-wheel drive (FWD), while the xDrive28i upgrades to all-wheel drive (AWD).
The version of the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine featured in the M35i sees some major upgrades, including a bigger turbocharger, for ratings of 302 hp and 332 lb-ft. Intelligent AWD, which is capable of shifting power between axles as necessary, and an upgraded 8-speed automatic transmission handle the power. The estimated fuel-economy return for the xDrive28i is 24 mpg city, 32 highway, and 27 combined. For the M35i, expect fuel-economy returns of 23/30/26.
The cabin features a mix of elegant and sporty styling. Standard features include keyless start, leatherette upholstery, 10-way power front seats, automatic climate control, and a power tailgate. Add the Convenience package for features such as keyless entry, auto-dimming mirrors, heated front seats, a garage door opener, and a panoramic sunroof. The Premium package adds options such as a heated steering wheel and a head-up display (HUD).
For 2020, the X2 features an 8.8-inch touchscreen display, upgraded from last year’s 6.5-inch unit. Features include navigation, voice recognition, a 7-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, HD Radio, and a one-year subscription to Apple CarPlay. Options include satellite radio, wireless-device charging, and a Harman Kardon premium audio system.
Standard safety features include a reversing camera and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Adaptive cruise control, front-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, speed-limit recognition, and front and rear parking sensors are available as options.
With approachable styling and strong performance potential, the X2 is one of the leaders in its class.
