Yes, the 2011 Volvo XC60, like countless offerings from the Swedish carmaker before it, delivers numerous safety features, highlighted by an innovative and new City Safety system. But make no mistake, this is not your daddy’s boxy, old-school Volvo. The 2011 Volvo XC60 provides impressive performance and handling in a stylish and fun-to-drive crossover SUV that seats five.
How about that City Safety technology, though? Volvo says that 75 percent of all accidents occur at speeds of up to 18 miles per hour and that half of those happen in city traffic. The Volvo mission then is to improve on those numbers and minimize the effects of those collisions. The 2011 Volvo XC60 comes decked out with infrared laser sensors that determine whether you are approaching the car in front of you in traffic at too high a rate of speed. If so, the brakes get automatically applied. Ideally, that will be enough to avoid a crash, but it should at least mean a less-damaging bump.
Volvo added the XC60 to its American lineup in 2010, and its engine and trim lineup have been tweaked a bit for 2011. A 3.2, 3.2 R-Design, T6, and T6 R-Design are the four trim offerings, and horsepower has been bumped a little bit across the board.
The 3.2 and 3.2 R-Design trims come with a 3.2-liter inline six-cylinder that puts out 240 horsepower with 236 lb-ft of torque. The turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder in the T6 and T6 R-Design pushes the numbers to 300 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque. The 3.2 and 3.2 R-Design come in front-wheel drive (FWD), but all-wheel drive (AWD) is optional. The T6 and T6 R-Design are AWD only. All models come only with a six-speed automatic transmission, and the 2011 Volvo XC60 can tow up to 3,300 pounds. Gas mileage estimates for the 3.2-liter versions with AWD are 18 mpg city and 25 highway. For the turbocharged 3.0-liter they slip to 17/22.
Reviewers like the sleek style, inside and out, of the 2011 Volvo XC60 and appreciate the comfort of its ride. It handles well, they feel, and some rank it as overall the best of the Volvos. They favor the power of the turbocharged six-cylinder, but are not impressed by its gas mileage, and as much as they like the City Safety setup and other Volvo technology, they find the navigation system confusing and difficult to use.
The 2011 Volvo XC60 lists power front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, and a CD/MP3 audio system among its standard features. Available add-ons include heated front and rear seats, a panoramic sunroof, and Volvo’s integrated child booster seats.
As expected with a Volvo, safety features are abundant, starting with City Safety, which comes standard on the 2011 Volvo XC60. Dual front and front side airbags, curtain side airbags, antilock four-wheel disc brakes with brake assist, and an electronic stability system are among the standard safety items. A lane-departure warning system and high-speed collision warning system are available.

The car is powerful, surprisingly handle wells, Volvo's 5 year safe and secure program and City Safety are unbeatable. It does work and saved me from crash a couple times.

We shopped a lot for a mid sized SUV before buying the Volvo. Rented Kia, Nissan, and Mercedes for trips and for a week in town. Borrowed an Audi Q5 for a while. Test drove a Lexus. The Japanese cars felt and looked cheap except the Lexus and all of them had sloppy handling and brakes compared to the Europeans. The Audi and Mercedes had nicer fit and finish than the Japanese and better handing, but ergonomic problems that we felt would always be irritating.
The Volvo has attractive styling inside and out. Ergonomics are very good. Fit, finish, and materials are on par with the other high end Europeans, but price is considerably lower. Handling is good for an SUV. Ride is quite and comfortable. Safety rating is excellent.
Our XC-60 is the base model with a few options, but offers pretty much everything we wanted. The only change I have made to it was the addition of an aftermarket rear sway bar. That improved the handling without any negative effects on ride comfort. Would consider larger factory wheels with lower profile tires for even more precise steering.Nov 26, 2013

Did a lot of research (Highlander, Enclave, as well as American-brand crossovers) and when it came down to it, I was deciding between the XC60 vs. the Audi Q5. Liked both in terms of options, luxury & price vs the others in the class. Was on the lookout for a pre-owned Q5 2.0 given the reviews that said it was more fuel efficient than the 3.2 but couldn't find one in my desired timeframe.
Car feels very solid and safe when driving. It has good to great acceleration when getting on the highway, but I don't really use the T6 engine to its full capability as I prioritize fuel efficiency.Oct 12, 2012

Compared Kia, Subaru, Audi, and MB before buying the Volvo. CX60 had the best combination of quality, price, and performance of any we saw. Zero maintenance costs have been nice and there has been no reason to take it back for anything other than routine service.
Handling, braking, and acceleration are more than adequate. Interior and exterior are attractive design, material quality is excellent, and workmanship is at least as good as any other, better than most. Very comfortable and feels safe under pretty much all conditions.Nov 22, 2011
