Write a reviewAfter last year's update, the 2009 Scion xB returns unchanged. The box-like wagon boasts expansive interior room and cargo versatility wrapped in a distinctive and immediately recognizable package.
The front-wheel-drive wagon features 46 inches of headroom and a cargo capacity of anywhere from 21 to 70 cubic feet, depending on whether the rear split-folding bench is folded flat. The cargo area comes with tiedowns and an organizer, and a customized roof rack can be added. Powering all this is the same 2.4-liter inline-four engine that sits in the Scion tC, but here it delivers 158 hp and 162 ft-lbs of torque. A 5-speed manual or 4-speed shiftable automatic are the available transmissions. Like the tC, the 2009 xB comes with a full array of features, including power windows, locks, and mirrors, a CD player, remote entry, cruise control, and an iPod jack. It adds a trip computer, a rear window wiper, and larger 16-inch steel wheels with three wheel-cover choices. On the safety side, it earns five stars in side impact tests and four in the front. Standard equipment includes traction and stability control, 4-wheel ABS, dual front-side and side curtain airbags for both rows, and mirrors with turn signals.
What makes this wagon appealing to its youth-oriented target audience are an array of customizable options, available as single add-ons rather than bundled in packages. Larger wheels, an array of interior mood lighting, various interior trim materials, upgraded audio, a DVD player, and touchscreen navigation are just a few of the available features. It's no surprise, then, that one of the highlights of 2009 Scion xB ownership is its versatility, along with its roomy cabin and comfortable seating. Of particular appeal to car buyers of any age is the relatively low price tag for all that you get. Low-quality interior materials, awkward gauges and dials, and a tendency for body roll constitute the majority of complaints. And in this age of rising gas prices, the xB's 20/27 mpg doesn't win many fans either.

I primarily use this car to get to and from work. I am a musician. The Scion xB has more room than most SAVs and is great on gas. The only downside to the car is that if running Low Pro tires, it can get a bit noisy. Other than that...Rock On!Mar 19, 2015

The outside appearance is deceiving, making one think that this car is small on the inside, but it's not. There is ample leg room inside, which makes it really comfortable to drive, and just enough space to do grocery shopping. It took awhile to adjust having the gauges in the center of the dash instead of directly in front, but it didn't take long for me to accept the position.
On the outside, there were a few small problems with the trim coming off, something that was quickly remedied with double stick tape. And there were a few retaining screws that worked loose from the tire wells, nothing that a few turns of a screw driver took care of. Yes, to some, it does look 'boxy', but it eventually grew on me and the design's not bad.
Around town and on level ground, the xB drives great, zipping in and out of traffic. We live on the higher elevation, and the car does lose some power climbing up the mountain road. But with the 5-Speed transmission, the power loss was minimal, the lowest gear I needed to down-shift to climb the hill was 4th gear, so it did good getting us home.
We purchased this car because we needed something where everyone could sit comfortably (our other vehicle is a Ford Truck), while going to and from work. We were on a very, tight budget, and the xB fitted our budget nicely. Our main concern was cost, and finding this deal was one we couldn't pass over.
As far as mpg goes... right now we're getting minimal 25mpg in the city, more than what the window sticker dictated (22). We've yet to estimate highway mpg (never had a chance to cruise the highway yet).
If you're on a budget, and don't really care for appearance but want quality and good performance, I'd recommend the Scion xB. I grew to love this car, and you could too.Aug 14, 2010

First of all this is my wifes car and what can I say it's a box with wheels.A little more areodynamic than the first generation design but still a box.This is a great all around car and has plenty of cargo space for hauling items.It also has plenty of front and rear passenger space, took this on a long vacation and was plenty comfortable.The car handles very nice and drives nice too.It gets very good fuel milage for being a box, in the low 30's,and so far there have been no maintenance issues but then again it's a Toyota chassis.The generation 1 lacked in power but this being a second gen. they put a slightly larger engine in it and for it's size has plenty of power.As far as appearance goes it's a scion and only scion owners understand, we love them they are fun and unique to drive.The box is either loved and respected or you just don't like them but then again if you don't like it you've never driven it.Nov 05, 2009

Perhaps a better car for a younger person. A stick shift is a definite. The Ipod interface is a nice touch. A little more sport and a little more utility and this car could be a hit. Needless to say, I kept it for only 3 months.Aug 10, 2009

I traded my 05 in and bought the 09.I thought the 05 was great then i drove the new one and wow, i was blown away just getting in it . The space, performance, and power all increased noticeably.It doesnt hav as great as milage but you have to give and take a little. Its quieter than older models, it looks sleek, and its fun to drive. Hope this helps with your decision.Jun 26, 2009

It's really roomy and comfortable. Took it on a few roadtrips and I didn't feel the burning desire to get out of the car and stretch after a few hours. Its decent on gas, fun to drive, peppy, good in the snow, lots of cargo room (70cu inches).
Onboard Nav is sweet! (especially with the iPod hook up in the center console) Touch screen control of my iPod.

A blast to drive and the 'low-rider' appearance makes for compliments from most valet parking attendants! We have added a few modifications here and there to the interior, mainly chrome finishings and alloys. The teal green colour is just fabulous. Performance wise, it is punchy and quick to react when needed. Spacious, good on gas and exceptional build quality. Only downside for me was having to wait for weeks until it was ready and no negotiation on pricing, but hey, when you want quality, you have to pay for it, yes?Dec 04, 2008

My 09 Scion XB went up in flames. Need warranty info & dealership is no longer in business
I bought a car through your website at a dealer who is no longer in business. The name of the dealer was called high quality auto. I bought the car last year in October and just three nights ago it went up in flames. The car was a 2009 Toyota Scion xB. I had also bought and extended warranty. However, this extended warranty was in my glove box. Therefore, now it is toast. Like I mentioned Karma the dealership does not exist any longer. Because of this, I'm unable to locate the warranty company of which I bought it from. I am contacting you in hope that you might be able to help me in finding out who this Warranty company might possibly be. I only had liability insurance, so I'm desperate and you are my last hope. If compensated, I absolutely plan on using your site again to find my next car. My only other possible means of compensation, is a factory recall on my specific vehicle that I've discovered. I know the warranty could help me faster. Which would be ideal, being that I'm an Uber driver.... Or at least I was.
