One fairly significant and one minor change define the 2009 Dodge Caliber hatchback. Gone are the R/T AWD, the SE Plus, and the SXT Sport trims. Newly available for 2009, at least in the pricier trims, is the Uconnect hands-free communications system. The Caliber, which replaced the Dodge Neon in '07, is still offered in four trim levels for '09: base SE, midrange SXT, higher-range R/T, and the high-performance SRT-4. Its 5-speed manual transmission, standard on all trims except the SRT-4, is a saving grace vis-a-vis fuel economy.
Caliber’s base SE trim, which is basic indeed, features a less-than-powerful but reasonably fuel efficient 1.8-liter, DOHC, 16-valve inline four that puts out 148 hp with the 5-speed manual. The standard single-CD, 4-speaker stereo, outside temperature sensor, and rear spoiler do little to offset the SE’s 15-inch wheels - deemed noisy in corners - and a lack of ABS. An EPA estimated 24/29 mpg city/highway might make up some for the SE’s lack of pizazz. Caliber’s ’09 SXT trim also comes standard with the 1.8-liter I4 and 5-peed stick shift, but offers a few more features, like 17-inch wheels, Satellite radio, air-conditioning with the popular Chill Zone glovebox drink cooler, power windows, and front disc ABS. A 2.0-liter, 158-hp I4 with a constant-velocity transaxle (CVT) that gets 23/27 mpg, is optional for both SE and SXT trims. Further options for the SE include front disc ABS and a 6-CD/MP3 system. For the SXT trim, options include the Musicgate Power Sound system, a sunroof, 4-wheel ABS with brake assist, and Dodge’s electronic stability program (ESP).
With the R/T and SRT-4 trim levels, the 2009 Caliber begins to approach true comfort and convenience. The R/T features a 172-hp, DOHC, 2.4-liter I4 and 5-speed manual (or optional CVT) that claims 23/29 mpg (the CVT is rated at 21/25). The R/T also comes with such standard offerings as 4-wheel ABS with brake assist, 18-inch aluminum wheels, a sport suspension, performance steering, heated cloth front seats, and Boston Acoustic speakers. Options for the R/T include a sunroof, leather, ESP, Uconnect, and the MyGig infotainment system. The ’09 SRT-4 is equipped with a turbocharged version of the 2.4-liter I4. Coupled with the solely offered Getrag 6-speed stick shift, the 286-hp turbo has earned raves from owners of ’08 SRT-4s. The turbo is rated 19/27 mpg. The SRT-4 also features 4-wheel ABS with brake assist, 19-inch aluminum wheels, performance steering, and a high-performance suspension. Options include ESP, MyGig, and a 13-speaker Kicker sound system powered by a 322-watt amp and 200-watt subwoofer.
With 18.5 cubic feet of cargo space, its much-vaunted roominess, and Dodge’s always-cutting-edge exterior styling, ’08 Caliber owners praised its looks and functionality. Owners were less enthusiastic, however, about the lower-than-advertised fuel economy from all Caliber trims and the poor acceleration of the 1.8-liter I4. Caliber’s standard safety features range from merely front and side curtain and supplemental airbags in the ’09 base SE to front-wheel disc ABS in the SXT to 4-wheel ABS disc brakes with brake assist in the R/T and SRT-4. The Dodge Caliber won NHTSA 5-star crash test ratings again for ’09.

Handled great and was fun to drive. The improved tires added better handling in rain and especially snow. It was easy to park and had great visibility. With the fold down seats it can handle most household purchases and even bicycles.

I bought this car originally to travel for work and less than a month later was given a company vehicle. The car sat for a year until my wife got pregnant and had to give up her 2-door Accord in lieu for this more car seat friendly vehicle. She has been happy with it with the exception of the bad suspension (feel every bump) and the horrible sound dampining qualities (hear every road noise).Jul 01, 2014

Has enormous blind spots from the driver's perspective - can't tell where the front end is, where the back end is, where anything is on the right at all. Transmission is a complete piece of junk. It has to be replaced all at the same time instead of maybe fixing a part. I bought this car in August 2009 and the transmission had to be replaced in January 2011 and here we are doing that again in June 2012. It's good for about 18 months. If you hit the brakes at the same time you hit a bump or a pothole, the car actually lurches forward. There is no pickup to speak of, which makes getting up to highway speed on an interstate on-ramp impossible. People tailgate me all the time because of its low performance, especially from a dead start. The continuous variable transmission ought to be outlawed - you might as well consider it to be disposable, because the company obviously does. If it lives long enough for me to pay it off, I will set it on fire and go buy a Ford Ranger - mine was 10 years old and had 120,000 miles on it before it had transmission problems, and got about the same gas mileage as this one does.Jun 20, 2012

Easy to mod, plenty of bay room and a very close nit, active community. Great gas mileage! I was peaking 41mpg @ 88mph cruise control when i traveled across country and have yet to see anything less than 22mpg even when speeding through town. Mar 15, 2012

Fun car to drive, great power for a 4 cylinder. It's like getting a mid-size car for the price of a compact, but of course being a little heavier and bigger you burn a little more gas. Great style. Believe the expert reviews. Worst car I have ever driven,
including rentals and other peoples old beaters. Couldn't wait
to get rid of it. Bought it because I was driving a lot (200
miles/day) and needed better gas mileage. Gas mileage was
terrible and with the tiny gas tank, I was filling up every 2
days. Got about 200 miles before fuel light came on. My Dad
gets better mileage on his 8 cylinder Cadillac. Car was noisy,
interior noise was almost unbearable. Handling was awful,
always made wide turns. Bad engine, no power, very loud.
Caliber is cheaply built, don't expect to see many of these on

fun to drive with the 5spd. fuel efficient as well. average 28-30mpg mixed driving. has decent pickup and is real quiet stock. intake mods make acceleration improvement and throttle response. a little bit much on body roll but strut bars can be added. Apr 08, 2010

Wicked accleration, braking, handles well but has wicked torque steer. An awesome, fun car to drive that definitely hauls. With 285hp stock, and awesome things like a boost gauge, 1/4 mile timer, and G-Force gauge, it's definitely a fun car yet functional as a daily driver. Costs about $40 to fill with supreme, and goes roughly 500km on a tank even if you don't drive it too nicely... tons of room inside, well set up with super comfortable racing style seats. Overall, I give this car a 9.5 outta 10!! Comes with a pretty decent sound system built in if you get the kicker system too...Jan 11, 2010

great car financially. good gas mileage, good braking. only problem i have had with the car is the low tire gauge. it broke and constantly said the tire was low, even though it wasnt. also, getting the change oil light even after changes, was difficult to turn off.

I used to drive an SUV... Wanted better milage with the same elevated seating. The Caliber filled the bill. Never would have paid over 20K for a car... The Caliber's price sealed the deal.
I love the CVT tranny... 4 bangers tend to sound "buzzy" winding through the gears... Cali with CVT is smooth as silk. No "gear hunting" with the cruise control on going up hills.

The performance of the Caliber was odd at best. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) was an absolute nightmare! If you are the type that likes to actually drive their car then the constant sound of the same RPM level will kill you, but if you want a smooth running car that basically drives you, then this is your car. The extras on the car were definitely nice. I averaged between 20 and 21 MPG while driving the car. It was not overly fun to drive.Mar 03, 2009

Brilliant black paint is stunning. Interior is stylish, very roomy and exceedingly comfortable.2.0 engine is powerful and smooth. Ride is tight and quiet. My only complaint is visibility out of rear side windows is poor, but I just added small, convex mirrors to the door mirrors and solved that issue. 35mpg at 80mph. Awesome! 50 MPG. It was cheaper to buy new than used. Drives nice, it's comfortable, and a 5 speed. It is surprisingly big.

I hate this car. I bought it off off my brother whom really never drove it. He got a hella deal and is a mechanic and helped me out in a needy situation. He bought a junk/parts caliber to replace damn near everthing needed which wasn't much... New starter and ignition. Now month later it willhave lil fits and not wanna start. But if i wait a half hour or so it'll b fine. Also something recently caused the starter wires to loosen so if i wait till it cools down i can wiggle wires and BOOM it starts. Who wants to keep doin that??? Now the malfunction light indicating engine transmission issues is on. If i drive over 65 the temp light will come on smh...i live in the city and have alot of highway miles in comparison to others and idk if that makes a difference. This car is my biggest headache!
