The 1999 Toyota Tacoma stayed largely unchanged for the model year, with the exception of some new option packages and color choices.
The 1999 Toyota Tacoma was available in nine different configurations: the Regular Cab, Xtracab, and Xtracab V6 in 2WD or 4WD, Limited Xtracab 4WD, PreRunner 2WD, and PreRunner V6 2WD. The base engine was a 2.4 liter 142 horsepower four cylinder. The 4WDs came standard with a 2.7L 150 horsepower four cylinder. The V6 has 3.4 liters and 190 horsepower. Fuel economy was about 17/20 mpg.
Drivers like the 1999 Toyota Tacoma because of its compact size, Toyota reliability, and excellent off-road capability. The PreRunner, which is higher off the ground than the other 2WDs, is especially popular. Some drivers also complain that the ride can be bumpy and that the extended cab seating is very cramped.

The Toyota Tacoma if properly cared for will run for a very long time. The truck I looked at had rust erosion everywhere. 172,000 miles and still asking $4,500

First of all, bought brand new. The front end seemed and still seems loose as a crosswind can and does easily push the truck sideways. The radiator needed replacement too early...even after yearly maintenance using distilled water. Other than that it is very basic transportation. Manual transmission gets me off the line pretty quick...compared with some of today's small cars. I tried an automatic (early 00's) it felt like a go cart. Definitely needed to upgrade the stock 14" rims to 15" as there were no quality tires available in 14". Jul 19, 2012

Wish it had another set of doors and larger second row seats. It needs weight in the back when it snows or if its slippery outside so its encouraged to have sand bags in the back to help with weight.Feb 08, 2012

Bought this truck to use for work - Again Toyota amkes some of the best trucks both small and full size. Put 203,000+ miles on this truck and never had a problem. The smaller truck does bounce you around a little one rough roads but a good reliable vehicle. The only reason for sell it was needed a bigger vehicle for the family. This truck got about 21 mpg on mixed driving - best was 26 mpg on a highway trip. The truck was a TRD Extended cab with a 2.7L with a 5 speed. May 06, 2010

performance...it has a pretty powerful V6, build quality is durable, appearance is decent, cost of ownership isnt overbudget at all, fun factor is up b/c i've wheeled it few times and it did awesome for a stock truckNov 08, 2009

Performance was pretty good, it had the V6 with RWD in it so it was putting out a bit under 200 HP. So when you stepped on it it really picked up you could lock up the breaks and do a bit of drifting as well. Build Quality was superb I mean its a Toyota my only con for build quality is that the interior was cheap. Appearance, it looked great I put some new rims on it and Yokohama racing tires but it was not a "beautiful truck". Apr 01, 2009

I love this truck because it's versatile, able to haul most things that the average person needs to haul, the gas mileage is that of the average car, about 26-30mpg and because I have the extended cab I can haul more than two people if the need arises. It has been very low maintenance, just the usual upkeep and one break job so far and I have almost 130000 miles on it so far. It has good get up and go though the engine is a little small when it comes to pulling over high mountains. It maxes out at about 55-60mph if the grade is really steep. Other than that though I don't have any complaints about it's abilities. I have driven it hard out in the woods on logging roads and it preforms beautifully, never really complaining as we snake over water bars and bumpy roads! I also like that I can turn off the passenger airbag so if I have older children or shorter people in the car I can feel safe having them ride in the front seat. Dec 15, 2008

This little truck the do anything. It was really quick and had to most powerful 4 cyl engine I have ever seen. I delivered papers in this truck for three years every morning. It never let me down, even when driving in a tropical storm that submerged the entire front of the truckAug 10, 2008

4-cyl, manual, 4x4, extended cab, extended bed, quality off-road tires. what's not to love about the Tacoma. best car I've had. much better than the old Previa, but she was nostalgic. the only thing that sucks is that thegates been all messed up so I have to get some paper to fix this bad boy up before I can actually customize.Aug 09, 2008

Due to the supercharger, this quickly became a "sport-truck". Although it was a sport-truck, it still was able to haul quite a bit. The added clearance due to the PreRunner trim allowed for more weight to be hauled, and the engine would easily push the much heavier truck into motion.Jun 26, 2008

this truck is a great solid truck. My dad bought it back in 1999 and we still have it. once i start driving my dad is going to hand it down to me. this truck has 200,000 miles on it and it is still kickin. the truck has a fully reinforced frame, with independent susspention, and a half brush guard. the handling and power of this ride is absolutly unbelievable. for a jacked up toyota, it's as smooth a ride as any.Apr 20, 2008

Well friends, I've removed old trees/stumps with it, have taken it offroad in desolate and remote offroad situations and have never been in need of a tow or assistance... Honestly, I've been extremely pleased with my trucks offroading capabilities and qualities, I've been able to go places normal average "Joe" trucks couldn't with the optimum size, handling for certain, manueverability and such. Only downfall is my cab on the inside of course, which looks like you know what, as my drivers side seat is torn up slightly on the left side, to which I applied a simple solution: Factory quality seat covers which are great with the added material and padding comfort! Also, to be honest the cab is a tad small, though honestly adequate for most others as I'm somewhat big/tall? Also, I'd have to very, very much have to say that the body and style/paint and design have/has held up wonderfully, aside from a jerk doing a hit and run on me a year back which was an abhorrent thing and have still been too busy and not wanting to pay the 1,000 dollar deductible friends (too bad as it's a sweet looking truck)? Anyway's to conclude, it's been a great and very nice truck overall, though honestly the power was never quite enough for me as I installed a plethora of very high quality performance products, though still not enough for my taste, however I outperform a lot of V8's which is fun and surprising for them as I use no labels or clues (ha, ha)... Another great factor in choosing this truck, was/is its ability to handle high quality/high performance upgrades; it's been 120K miles now and it still performs beyond optimal and I'm more than happy with a truck this old, that performs so young... Much peace to you all, great luck in finding a truck, hopefully a Tacoma, especially the new V6 model, which mine is the of course older smaller body and engine (stock of course); I would have given the highest rating for this truck, my 99 TRD 3.4L V6 4WD EX/CAB, however I'm a bit jaded I suppose or jealous of the newer and far superior brand new V6 Tacoma? It's got (Newest Taco) a much more appealing design, bigger mid-size body, higher horsepower flagship V6 engine around 250 HP which I've heard is on par performance wise with a smaller V8 vehicle(s) and such? Again, I wish you all the ultimate best in your search, now's a great time to pick up a cheaper used (but very nice) brand new body style and engine Tacoma design as it's a wonderful truck coming from my buddies, so take care all and have a great day no doubt...Nov 03, 2007

I replaced my injectors got it all back together and I can not figure out how to get the air out of the lines. I haven't been able to find a valve to let the air out. Anybody know if there is one, where it is or how I get the air out of the lines? Thanks

My 1999 tacoma, 45,000 miles, has a problem in 3rd gear. When shifting from 2nd to third the transmission pops out of 3rd. If the shifter is held in third it will only stay in gear as long as it is held. the other gears are ok. What are the options to consider for repair?
