This was a great first car but with terrible fuel economy. Had a classic look may never go out of style, plenty of room, and was surprisingly comfortable (considering it's basically a truck). It never broke down and was perfect for western New York winters. It was eventually sold to my next door neighbor, where it terrorized me for three more years, sitting there in his driveway.Dec 22, 2014

i owned 4 plus Cherokees in my days... this was my favorite one, towed small trailer good, gas milage ok lots of power went great, good brakes fun driving and dependable great engine lots of power handled good would recommendOct 19, 2014

I really like the capabilities of this vehicle, and it's only gotten stuck once since I've owned mine. Gas mileage again, isn't the greatest, but I'll sacrifice some MPG's to have fun and not worry about the snow during wintertime. Rust likes to eat it away as well :/May 05, 2014

We absolutely love our Jeep. We will probably buy a second one to replace our Ford Taurus Wagon as our other winter vehicle. Our summer cars are both Sports Cars (a Mazda Miata and a Datsun 240-Z) so we're into good handling - and despite being an SUV, the Jeep Cherokee is a VERY good handling vehicle - we have Rancho Shocks on it and the suspension is nice and tight - it takes curves great. Also has very spirited acceleration. It is a blast to drive in snowy weather - nothing stops it (we have Bridgestone Blizzaks on the original 15" wheels for winter and a set of Goodyear Fortera TripleTreds on 16" Wheels for the rest of the year. Gas Mileage is a bit low compared to more modern SUVs (we average around 14-15 mpg).
Now that it's getting older, minor wiring issues are starting to crop up (Drivers Door Speaker no longer works, 3rd Brakelight only lights if tailgate is open, Electric Window switches on passenger doors stopped working even when master switch is in "On" position, electric door locks only function when door is in certain positions). Fortunately, the Driver's Master set of switches for the windows still works - so I have all the control... :-)
The Engines and Drivelines in these Jeeps go on forever - but as they age, smaller issues happen with wiring, alternator, etc. But bear in mind, I've now got nearly 200,000 miles on it and it is 16 years old. I remember a time when if one got 100,000 miles and 6 or 7 years of good service out of a car (or Jeep) one was doing good. This is an excellent jeep.
Got my family to and from vacations, excellent family vehicle.
Plenty of space for a family with 2 children.
Very reliable,never had a problem.
Would buy another 1998 jeep Cherokee

This thing just won't die!! But to be fair, I'm glad it hasn't. This truck's
been through so much and keeps on kicking! It's cheap to maintain,
solidly built and tough as nails. It'll probably still be running when I'm in

minimal signs of aging. very fun. classic design and legendary jeep
performance. no bells and whistles, no unnecessary options, not much to go

It is a good vehicle for my purposes. Having no swaybar front or rear
means it's not a race car. The offroad capabilities make up for the street
worthiness. Having aussie lockers front and rear give it great traction

its my off road rig on 33's 6 inch lift winch bumpers front and rear, rock sliders, hid 6000k HID coversion, HD steering, CB soon to have a locked 8.8 with 4.10's
I built it my self with the help of some friends. I was in to looking good but one you tag a tree thats pritty much over
Its a blast to drive and goes almost anywhere.

I love my jeep...its been a very dependable vehicle and the 4 wheel drive is impeccable. ill be buried in my cherokee. i range from 18mpg to around 21 and have had same tires for 80 thousand miles. had to replace typical maintnance stuff and a power steering pump but other than that its never let me down.Nov 26, 2009

Lots of low end torque and a great car. freakin tough, it's practically bulletproof. this car can take any beating you can shell out. The standard transmission gets about 18/22 MPG, which is pretty good for the 4.0L straight six. Overall it's a great SUVJun 23, 2009

Gas mileage is not the best and that is important these days, but no worse then any other SUV. However it is very reliable and has a very low cost to maintain. Plus nothing is more fun then driving it in the snow or off-road.Mar 03, 2009

This is by far the best vehicle I have ever owne, hands down. She has 258,000 miles on her and everything works. I mean even the lights in the ashtrays. She runs smooth, starts every time, has never let me down, and has been up to her wipers in mud and water. I can't praise this vehicle enough. It accelerates really quickly, but the brakes are a lot less sensitive than my other vehicles. The back hatch rattles a bit when you drive, but other than that, it's nice. It's lifted, so the gas mileage is a bit more than it would be normally, but altogether it's not bad at all. It's a VERY fun car to drive-- offroading in this thing is the best. :)Dec 16, 2008

This car rules!! with the sturdy jeep construction and the monstrous 4.0 litre engine and switchable sports box(automatics only) it makes for eye opening acceleration and the power for towing anything from a trailer to a tractor....Off road capability isnt the best, however, with its good design and sturdy construction if you bounce into a few rocks or hitch up on a tree stump dont worry too much(trust me I know)

I love this car, I am on my second! A it thirsty but is forgivable because it's can do everything an estate can anywhere (on or off the road). Doesn't roll as much as a Discovery or other high clearance 4x4's and looks good at the same time.Apr 08, 2008

I love this Jeep! This is the second one I have owned and I am totally hooked on Jeeps. I can haul just about anything and have! I have used just my Jeep to move twice! We have even slept in the back when out tent sprang a leak while camping. I has good accelleration and handles well off road as well as on and the gas mileage is great. Apr 07, 2008

Stock its pretty tough, the 4.0 has more then enough power and with stock tires you can easily break loose and let it slide or play grip for handling that can keep up with any car I've met(not to say its a track car, just that your average driver can't readily out run you).So If you are into a fun but useful car, this is for you, plus its a jeep, and what makes a jeep a jeep is what you do to it, like lifting and bumpers etc. Thats another plus, there are so many options that if you want it you can have it on the XJ, and if you can't buy it, You can fabricate it yourself following someone elses directions(as its already been done if you're just now thinking of it).Mar 22, 2008

I love this car. But you have to know how to drive it, they are very different vehicles. They are full of personalility, and will take care of you if you take care of it. Sometimes you have to work with it, but if you can trun a wrench you can easily fix this jeep. Have fun with it! Dec 21, 2007

1998 Jeep- Turns Over But Won't Start
Just bought a 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport as a winter vehicle and to plow. Ran great for a day and drove to work. Went to start it to leave, it took a couple times but started. Let it warm up, came back out and it had quit. Tried starting it, just cranks and won't fire. Replaced the coil and crank sensor. Same problem, cranks but won't fire. It's not worth taking into a repair shop, ready to cut my losses at almost $2000 and scrap it. Any ideas or help? At this point don't want to put much more into it.
