The Suzuki Samurai, the last uk version of the Suzuki manufactured jeeps which originated in the late 1940s. Fitted with a 1.3 fuel injection engine, the Samurai was also the most powerfull of the "jeep" style Suzukis. Very similar in design to the traditional land-rover vehicles, but simplified - lighter, smaller and much more capable off-road (and on) than the series Land-rovers on which the designs were based.
I have driven many 4x4 vehicles both on and off road, and I have to say the Samurai is the most capable in standard form. This is unless you are towing a large load, where a bigger engine and more weight are a must.
There are many spares available, and at very modest prices. Modification parts are also available off the shelf and are manufactured by most of the leading modification manufacturers.
As far as on the road driving goes, you dont buy a Samurai if you are going to be driving miles every day. The ride is harsh and bouncy, the steering is vague, and performance is hardly sports-car like, however show it some mud and you'll have a grin from ear to ear. Modify it for off-road use and only your lack of driving skill will stop it, not the terrain.
If you are looking to get into off-roading for fun, then this is the only vehicle to buy. Easy to drive, cheap to buy, reliable, easy to keep running, and so popular you usually get your purchase price back when you sell it...Jan 13, 2009
