The 200SX returned to Nissan's lineup after a four year break in 1995. This time, it was based on the Sentra platform, and served as a replacement for the Sentra coupe, which was discontinued. The 200SX shared the Sentra's rounded body and the two lower-level trims shared the engine as well.
The 1995 Mazda 200SX came in three trim levels. The base model and the SE had a 1.6-liter, 115-horsepower four-cylinder engine. The higher-end SR-E had a 2.0-liter, 140-horsepower four cylinder. The base model was bare bones, while the SR-E was the sporty model came well equipped and was distinguished by a small spoiler.
Many drivers say the 1995 200SX is a fun, sporty alternative to a Honda Civic, and say fuel economy, the spacious interior, and reliability are their favorite qualities. Some dislike the car's appearance, with some comparing it to a "tennis shoe." Others complain that it doesn't have enough power.

Should've had a manual transmission. The automatic is geared far too conservatively for a reputedly 'sporty' car. Launches from standing are slow; but for passing on the highway, it gears down neatly and propels you around slower traffic sharpish. Braking and handling are v. good - but this should be expected from most Japanese sport compacts.
As a 'Tuner', this car is not really popular material:
Supercharging is not an option unless you can make one from scratch. Turbocharging is possible, though surprisingly, despite the popular SR-20 DOHC engine, there's really only one kit on the market for this car; and at $3-4 grand; it's just not worth it.
Another 'Tuner' note: Aside from a nifty pair of vented front quarter panels on the market, the body/mod kits out there tend to be the height of cheese. Save your money - the body looks about as good as it's going to.
Extremely good build quality; this car is 15 years old, with no rattles or squeaks. However, the car does tend to embody the sedate styling typical of Nissan's mid-90's: generally well-proportioned with clean, flowing lines - but not a really a head-turner. Rear deck spoiler is a nice touch. Interior is slightly better than the standard entry-level fare in the Import Market, but the tape deck is showing it's age!
Factory stance could be improved by lowering the front suspension by 1 1/2 inches - though it would have to be done properly to preserve the handling characteristics.
Cost of ownership - this car gets good mileage but only if you drive it conservatively. It's very low maintenance with high quality mechanical components through-out. No weak spots come to mind. I recently had to replace the alternator, but I really should've replaced the battery about a year before that!

Well got this car for $400 from a buddy in 09 it was a sad site. I've put about 2k in her to get her road worthy and omg was it ever worth it this car has got balls then again the JWT ECU, injen air intake, high port cams, and full exhaust doesnt hurt either.Mar 15, 2010

My car has a JDM SR20DE engine with JWT S3 cams, JWT ECU, OBX header, and OBX catback exhaust. The Transmission has a Exedy Stage 1 clutch. For Headling it has Prothane motor mounts, Stillen front strut bar, "No brand" rear strut bar, AGX Adjustable shocks, Hyperco Springs, NX2K brake setup

my brake set-up is amazing. my acceleration is pretty good. its n/a but still quick. my brakes squeak but just cuz they are steel compound racing brakes.
stock, this car is disgusting. it must be lowered significantly and get a different rear bumper
i have a real tough time getting good mileage, but thats only because its impossible to keep my foot out of it. if i could do so, i could easily get about 22-25 city and i do get 30+ highway.

Bought this car back in Feb as a completely stock, automatic 200sx S14 Luxury.
Replaced the wheels with something mildly better than stock and then the exhaust and air intake. The difference to performance was phenomenal!
Anyway, long story short. Engine is now blown since it must have been overboosting (15psi on stock controller when it's supposed to be 7 out of the factory. No idea how that happened) and it seems like I've spun the bottom end. Lovely!
So now it's my project car. Time to rebuild it bigger, stronger and better and get some real performance outta this puppy!Dec 03, 2008

The 1.6 liter engine doesn't pack much of a punch, but it's beat a couple Hondas to the speed limit (that's all the faster I'll go).
Gas mileage: Best 43mpg worst 33mpg (I don't drive easy)
Total miles: 220,000
No major mechanical breakdowns. I replaced the brushes in the starter, and the battery aside from the normal maintenance parts.
If you're 6 foot or taller avoid this car it's too small for you!Nov 14, 2008

The biggest draw card to a 200SX is the high power, light weight and RWD combination. The SR20DET is one solid engine, capable of producing up to and around 380-400RWHP on the stock internals, which is very impressive for a 2.0 litre 4 cylinder. The cars build quality is fantastic, very comfortable to drive and for it time was right up there with the best of them. My only gripes with the standard car is the small rear brakes, the fact that it is detuned by about 100HP on the stock turbo, the stock handling is very soft and the stock styling lacks actual style.
