Old Pro...tege — the cars suprisingly fast. I havent lost a race in it...yet. Its not the best looking but the white wheels help. gets good gas milage. but when i bought it i had to fix alot of stuff before i could even drive it. id recommend getting a newer 1 if your looking for a fairly sporty 4door with a very low running cost. Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.) Pros: lots of unexpexted horsepower Cons: needed alot fixed right when i bought it ![]() Looking for a Used Protege in your area?CarGurus has 23 nationwide Protege listings and the tools to find you a great deal. |

1994 Mazda Protege — Ahh...The 1994 Protege...Lets reflect on this a second.......I really have no good things to say. I really do not like the car. The only positive I got out of it was that I averaged around 30 mpg on the high way. It is shaky, not fast at all, have had to repair all the time, lots of squeaks and rattles, ugly as sin, poor interior quality, and its not fun to duck down so people don't see you driving it. I wouldn't buy another mazda in general. (an RX-7 or 8 being the exception) Pros: Fuel milage Cons: To many |

Good, Effecient Car — only had the 1.8 I believe, single over head cam, with surprising performance. good sold car, I commuted and abused it and it held up good and strong Pros: efficient and solid. good performance for what it was Cons: broke a strut haulin a carload. just a couple suspension issues. |

It's 14 Years Old And Still Goin - It Must Be A Keeper! — Nice car. Fun to drive. Nice and compact makes parking and lane changes a breeze! And it's a ton of fun to squeeze as many friends in as you can!! Pros: great steering, breaking, etc. radio. pretty comfortable and fun to drive and zip around town in. EXCELLENT gas mileage!! Cons: no a/c... which makes for a very hot summer - unless you use what we call the "560" air (all 4 windows plus the sun roof all the way open) |

Good Engine, Subpar Reliability — The Protege LX's contain Mazda's strong BPD engine, however everything else around it seemed to suck. Infact, I seriously think the engine was the best part of the car. It never burned a drop of oil, and it had decent pep... The car had a lot of nice features, sun roof, cruise, power windows & locks... It was a nice car, but I always had a new repair project for it on a monthly basis:( I probably spent nearly $1000 in parts for this car in the 10 months I had it and lost $1000 when I traded it in for the Vic... It was a bad deal:( Part of the reason I believe the car had so many issues was the way the previous owner took care of it, not necessarily because it was an outrageously awful car. Sometimes, I wonder if I should of kept it... I do miss the stick shift, but I'm not sure if the car would still be running today. I probably would have at least had to replace the clutch and/or the CV joints.
Pros:
- Strong little engine, 7000rpm redline:) I loved the way it sounded too
Cons:
- BAD reliability... Something new seemed to break every month |
