The 1991 Toyota 4Runner has earned a wonderful reputation as a solid, reliable SUV. The standard engine was a 2.0-liter I4, while buyers opted for a 3.0-liter V6 or either a 2.8- or 3.0-liter diesel V6.
While reviewers have praised the SUV's ruggedness and dependability, the complaints center on poor mileage (though many have said it is still good for an SUV) and weak engine. The V6 seemed to have been just enough to propel the growing SUV, while the I4 seemed to struggle under the weight.
For an older car, maintenance costs are few, and the exterior seems to be near-rust-free. Congrats to Toyota on building such a rugged SUV and to you if you own one!

I went up against a Jeep Cherokee and an isuzu trooper on a georgia red clay mud
trail and both got stuck and i never did. i was able to go more places then them

I own a 913 v6 4x4 5 speed runner and this thing is my baby! I never broke down requires little maintenance and is actually an eye catcher. I bought it stock and added a lift and 33" tires and this truck is a keeper. Only problem I have ever had was at 250xxx I needed to replace the o2 sensor but that's all! This was my first car. I loved it! It was great for camping and drive in movies.
The tranny went bad in the first month but the dealer was helpful and got me a new one for cheap. Other then that, just changed the oil and it ran beautifully.Apr 19, 2011

Its getting old but it still havent broken down, 4cyl great on gaz, real tough truck, fun to drive in the snow and mud, its been 6 months since i got it and i have only spent money on the oil change and new tires, but the horn isnt working anymore.Jun 14, 2010

The absoloute perfect bush buggy. Rock solid from the ground up making for easy maintenance and repair. You cannot kill this motor and the DT is unmatched. 4X4 is tough and low is low...the way it should be.
A lot of people complain about the power but it's not geared for highway use/towing/muddin like todays "crossovers"...it's geared as a bush truck...power where needed and not where it's not.
Fuel mileage sucks...that's a kicker when playin in the bush far away from gas stations!Nov 23, 2009

Great build quality, very comfortable but VERY underpowered. That gas milage wasnt very good though (about 14 mpg) and 4Runners are expensive to buy.
They also have great resale value, so while you pay more when you buy them, you will also get more when you trade it in.Sep 24, 2009

I love my car. Got it four years ago to use for moving rubbish bins to the local tip when I was in charge of a Scout Camp but then got the 4WDing bug and now wont get rid of it because all the new cars aren't strong enough to take them truly off road. I am in my 50's so I started 4WDing late and am now hooked. I have had a two inch body lift put in and a winch mount bull bar added. All I need now is the money to buy the winch. i love that my runner has 38" tires, coil spring suspension, arb airlockers front and rear, 4 extra headlights (HELLA) 4 work lights around the Car and a search light on top, the inside is loaded with cb and vhf radio, gps positioning system connectet to a laptop, good soundsystem , under the car i have a 3" exhaust system and extra fuel tank (enough fuel for 3 day off road trip in snow) only bad thing is it costs a little too keep it always running (stuff breaks down you know) but the fun factor is an A+Aug 31, 2008

400 000kms on the clock and still rocking strong. Despite me beating it silly, freezing it into lakes in the winter and dragging it out a month later. 22re engine, a little weak, but 4wheeling doesnt need the same kind of power as towing. i would get another one, loved that the top comes off.Aug 10, 2008

This is an extremley rare 4runner. Toyota only made the 2nd Generation 2doors from 1990-August of 1992. My particular model is very hard to find and was one of the fewest types made. What makes sets it appart from the other 1991's? This does: SR5 Package, Sunroof, Power everything, 3.0 3VZ-E V6, 5speed transmission, 4x4. That combination was in less than 100 of the 1991 2door models. Most have a automatic transmission and the 4 cyclinder. Jan 09, 2008

Toyota 4Runner transmission
I am very interested in a 1991 4runner. This vehicle looks well used and loved. If it wasn’t for the transmission i would say it’s perfect for me (well I prefer manual but you can’t always win). Okay so anyways he told me this.. “So you know the truck runs and drives but you can’t go to far because the trans fluid heats up. Will need a trans or At least add and additive. Still there are trans available for cheap” “It already has a huge trans cooler and lines Swap the trans takes about 3 hours/ $300” Is this pricing true and can you diagnose what the problem may be? She’s lifted and has all sorts of added features. Safari Snorkel, Roof headlights etc. 260 000KM’s $1800. What do you think? Thanks for the help! .
