1991 Saturn S-Series Preview summaryImage

The 1991 Saturn S-Series represented Saturn's first effort to capitalize on the success of foreign compact sedans. This new model helped pave the way for a strong franchise by using dent resistant plastic in the body and providing solid all-around performance. Overall, the 1991 S-Series had 4 trims: SL, SL1, SL2, and the SC. The first 3 gave consumers a dependable sedan with room for 5 while the SC provided a sportier alternative with 2 doors and room for 4. Drivers could group the 4 trims into 2 tiers. The lower tier includes the SL and SL1. Both use a 1.9 L, 85 hp, 4 cylinder engine and have black bumpers. The upper tier includes the SL2 and SC. These two trims have a 1.9 L, 124 hp engine and bumper colors that match the body. All trims come with standard 5 speed manual transmission or optional 4 speed automatic and ABS brakes. The SL and SL1 generally consume 27 mpg in the city, 37 mpg on the highway while the SL2 and SC can give you 23 mpg in the city, 33 mpg on the highway. Air conditioning comes as an option in all trims. Overall, the 1991 Saturn S-Series has stood the test of time. Consumers report very few problems, even with models pushing 180,000 miles. However, engine noise and a bland-looking exterior constitute the main concerns that have grown into a recurring theme with Saturn owners. Needless to say, consumers looking for more than just a serviceable ride should look further down the family tree for a more modern model.

Great acceleration, dent resistant vertical panels, light weight, long lasting, excellent handling qualities, especially at speed. Well balanced, designed to play in the twisties. Not a drag racer, but certainly an excellent daily driver. Phenomenal fuel mileage, between 36 and 42 mpg's.Jan 06, 2010
