The 1990 Jaguar XJ was a beautiful car with problems. My wife drove a van den Plas for years and it kept stalling. No one knew why and the factory had no explanation. But it was dangerous. One time we were cruising I-94 in Michigan going about 70 mph and the car died. Imagine going at that speed and suddenly having no steering, no brakes, no engine, nothing. It took more than a year to figure out that there was a serious computer problem. But during that year the car was in the shop almost as often as it was in our garage. So be careful if you want to buy one - check the service records very carefully. Remember, beauty is only skin-deep.Mar 29, 2021

Jaguar outdid themselves with this car, producing only 527 VANDEN PLAS MAJESTICS, and only for the US market in 1990. The classic style, outstanding Regency Red Metallic finish and impressive Magnolia Leather and Burled Walnut interior make it a very impressive show car.Nov 18, 2012

I own 2, 1988 Jaguars and have been very please with both of them over the past 15 years. Most people somehow get the impression they are expensive and hard to maintain, but this is simply not true. If you appreciate quality, durability and longevity with classic style the Jaguar XJ is a good choice.
This car was upgraded with the Austrian posi gear set which allows it to easily reach 150+ mph. The original imports into America were limited to about 130 or so. The gas milage possibly could be better, but considering it weighs almost 6,000lb .. 25 Hwy isn't too bad. If you are horsing around town only .. it can drop into the teens tho .. but it's sure fun to drive.Jul 30, 2012

Another Pininfarina design, and in my opinion one of the most beautiful sedans ever built. Exceptional appearance, and ride quality, and classic British interior. However, awful quality and this car cost me more money and spent more time in the shop than any other car I ever owned. Eventually had to cut my losses and sell it to avoid a divorce.Aug 19, 2011

Performance - Fast acceleration. Too heavy to spin the tires. Top speed of 140, not bad for an inline 6. Handling could be better, but it is sporty.
Build Quality - Good everywhere except the wiring, British cars are notorious for faulty wiring and Jaguar felt the need for separate fuses for both sides. Typical repairs for a 20+ y/o car.
Appearance - Beautiful car, commands attention on the road. Somewhat of a muscle car stance. Interior was well done, but lacks cupholders (not a single one in the whole car!!!)
Cost Of Ownership - Only takes premium gas, when I say only, I MEAN only. tried 91 and she spits a sputters, had to put octane booster to rid of the faulty gas. Repairs are few and far between, but expensive when you get them.
Fun Factor - Hellishly fun to drive, stock its nearly impossible to spin the tires, which could be good or bad depending on how you look at it. Handling is typical for a big car, but nice and sporty. Engine has a nice roar to it and revving high while parked will shift the car back and forth nicely xDJun 30, 2011

What they say about Jaguar cars is true..
You DO need two of them..
One to drive whilkst the other one is in the shop being fixed..
I had an XJ 6 series 3 .. and it blew up the motor twice before we allowed someone else to enjoy her..
and In my stupidity I ( some years later) bough an XJ SAries 3 V 12.
Youd thin k a man would learn>>?? Nope.. another Dud..

My Jaguar was a great driving car, it looked awesome and drove awesome... when
It would start. It wasn't very reliable, and that means a lot coming from someone
that has owned more than one British car. The interior felt cheap, and the wiring
was just plain stupidly engineered. Mileage was only mediocre for an inline 6 and it
was geared so high that acceleration was hardly an option. Also the fluid for the

Very Fast if you don't mind kickin it.Smoked a 2008 Bentley left it like it was standing still. He opened it up We laughed said ok bud here we go, and within two blocks I cleaned his A** damnn Bentley sounded like a Mortified Lawnmower..
On a bad note not enough road to open the car full. 232 mph before I ran outta straight road, had to back down..The car is a Dream to drive though.Cruisin,long runs,weddings, funerals,car shows..If you can maintain it it's well worth it.Feb 19, 2010

Solid? Yup! Saved my life when a Mazda RX7 plowed into my driver's side in 1987. Gorgeous Brittish Racing Green with gold side stripe & gold wheels. Tan leather interior - velvet head lining! I actually had an 88, but the car was missing from the list, 1990 was the closest.
The car in and of itself is beautiful. The lines are great, a definite improvement from the 1987.
The acceleration is a little lacking, It could have used a V8. The 1988 was one of the Last Models before Ford Purchased it - and now sold it to Tata (ewww - have you seen the new Tata cars??? yuck! - but i digress). THe braking and handling and ride were second to none. The car was SOLID and very safe.
Electonics were a mess, there was ALWAYS a bulb failure, and something somewhere was frying. Changing a headlight was also a 2 hour chore. YOu gotta remove part of the grill... Really??? But then 80s european cars were not highly noted for having good electronic systems in them.
Anytime you had to repair something, you were looking at spending an arm and a leg on the parts alone. Case in point new rear suspension $2000 if you kept the automatic ride leveling system or $750 if you removed it.

The vaccum cleaner.. used to suck girls into the back seat, may need another soon. High maintenance and fuel cost but who cares, if that bothers you then dont buy one. The 4ltrs-engine is not the most powerful way to drive a jag, but enough to make relaxed 200km/h without overusing the engine. Anyway the XJ will never be a sportscar... but an eye-catcher! You don't drive, you glide! Girls will always love it.. if it's a new one or an old one... it is a Jag and you will never be judged as snobby, but as classy! The daimler-interiour is just great with the wooden tables in the back, all the lights etc. Handle engine careful if cold.Mar 18, 2008

Pro`s easily outweigh the cons, buy a good one & you`ll fall in love, buy a bad one & watch your bank ballance plummet. Economy is the biggest issue, expect 14mpg in town, 25mph cruising on the motorway...Mar 16, 2008

This is a rare V12 with 300 horse power. It is a 1988 Series III V12 Vanden Plas imported from Canada -- one of the last of the Series III XJ's before they changed the body style. It has an incredible ride and effortless power. Not a dragster by any means but cruises along the highway with ablomp. It has beautiful wood trim, Connelly leather, and lambswool rugs.Jan 26, 2008

This was the first 'proper' car I drove after getting my full driver's license. My dad bought it from an expat & it was in immaculate condition.
Having a 3.6L engine made it one helluva cruiser & I found its steering to be light and brake pedals light as a feather. I really like the rims as well as the sheer comfort it brought to its driver as well as passengers.
However, it has also borne the brunt of countless electrical
problems, and I have had many breakdowns with the Daimler. I had a great time nevertheless, although my heart was soon swayed with the entry of a BMW 730i, which I drove for about a month before coming to the UK.
A few weeks back, my dad told me the car had ignition problems, & my mum insisted on selling the car after a string of mishaps. Sadly, the car was crashed into a river bank after being driven by a mechanic who was about to service the car. I do miss it, but I do feel sheepish knowing that it could've been much more reliable. When the car is parked the wheel is impossible to turn. When the car is stopped and idling the steering wheel is impossible to turn. VERY HEAVY. When the car is moving the wheel turns normal. What could be the problem?
