1988 Volkswagen SciroccoReview

I'm Incredibly Sorry I Sold It... — I wasn't in the market for a new car until early in 1989, and VW stopped importing them in late-1988. Locating one wasn't as easy as a Google search back then - I had a hell of a time finding a "flash silver metallic" 16V with leather and sunroof. Probably the best car I've ever owned (for 12+ years), but with a family of 4, I had to let it go. I've been kicking myself ever since. There were tons of high-quality aftermarket parts available, and the car was cheap and easy to work on. Good looking, of course, but the real payoff was the incredible performance and handling - definitely thanks to a strong engine, very light weight, and solid German engineering. How many very low-volume, practically hand-built at Karmann Coachworks, German sports coupes can you find for a Honda Accord price when new? And you rarely saw another one on the road - owning a Scirocco 16V was truly something special. Actually, Barrett-Jackson sold one at their flagship Scottsdale auction in 2008 (no kidding). Pros: Wicked good fun, incredible handling, strong performance, bulletproof motor Cons: I'm really sorry I let mine go, and finding a solid example is getting seriously expensive ![]() Looking for a Used Scirocco in your area?CarGurus has 1 nationwide Scirocco listings and the tools to find you a great deal. |

Gtx Sounds Like Sex And Once Was Lube — This car is fantastic! the only bad points are the dents n bodywork that I need to do at some point, the fact it is far too low and has to be driven with caution and the steering wheel needs to be changed to a flat bottomed one as combined with the ride height make getting in and out a bit of a mission, on the whole it is a great car and when it is finished (if any of my cars really ever will be) it will be second to none. Pros: performance, looks and smile factor. Cons: small and hot with the windows up and sunroof closed. |

Quick Lil Car. Super Fun While Zigging Or Zaging. — torque of the 16v come on pretty early. pulls hard for only having 125ish hp/tq. but its prolly cause it weighs less than a miata. and is not geared for freeway driveing. 75mph @ 4k rpm = madness Pros: fun on the back roads Cons: raging on the freeway. gotta get a .80 fif! |

My Frist Car — My first car, 1988 Volkswagen Scirocco has been my ongoing project for over 2 years now. I now have my license and the car is almost finished. The only thing left to do is the exterior (bodywork and paint). I have restored this car and it means a lot to me.
Pros:
Great engine
Cons:

A Marmite Car But If U Like It You'll Really Love It. — The eighties, pet shop boys, Human League, Duran Duran, Stone Roses, The Smiths.ALF, Atari's, Roland Rat, a truly great era!, Then of course comes Lipps Inc, Steve Forbert, Terri Gibbs. Truly Truly awful. Then There are the cars Acura Legend, BMW M1, Delorean, Lamborghini Countach, Ferrari Testarossa the golf and some not so good! The Sinclair C5, Yugo, And pretty anything from The brazier huggers at Leyland! Fortunately, for me buying on a whim this comes well and truly in the first list. This car is marmite, fair enough, but this car from the second you sit in it you are aware you are in a solid well built Germanic masterpiece! the second I started it up it I was rewarded with a raw I'd never heard from a 4 cylinder engine, Outside of an Alfa anyways, and take it past 4 thousand and wow! I love every second behind the wheel. Then threes the handling, it’s a very low car that corners like its on rails but when it does let go its very manageable. And I simply love walking to this car in a car park from every angle this car just hits the right buttons! That boot is somewhat huge too, could easily hide 3 bodies in there, 4 if u cut them up properly! Yes the gear change is hard, the clutch a bit too heavy and the standard bakes woefully inadequate and the dash which could never be described as attractive, conceder it perhaps Raisins in a good curry wrong but kind of right at the same time! In conclusion, if u like it I see no real reason not to snap one up! If u don't like its looks then u probably didn't bother reading this so there u go! Pros: Great looks,Great handling, a quick little bugger! roomy too i'm over 6 foot and enough room for a whistle blowing glove wearing rave up. Cons: Dash hasn't aged well! looks dated. Nit picking though. |
