One Foxy Ride — The worst part about this car is that it is so rare, the best thing about it is as well. It gets noticed all the time and I see people checking it out all the time. I was even pulled over once, for the officer to talk about it. Light and fuel efficient. If kept in good condition, this is a rare jewel of a car.

Pros: Cheap, efficient, reliable car. And it gets noticed, ALL the time. Can haul a roomful of furniture and not be bogged down. Very easy to maintain.

Cons: Hard to find body parts if tail lights get smashed, also hard to find wagon side windows. If you have damage to those windows and don't know a good place to get custom glass, you might as well get rid of the car. No power steering, brakes, windows, anything. Wheel bearings go out rather quick, but they're cheap and fairly easy to replace (understand this is a typical 70's-90's VW problem)

Good, Solid Little Car; Wish I Could Buy Something Like It New Todfay. — Had our 2-door wagon since new ($9,000 out the door). Still runs just fine, front seat back latch mechanism on driver's side died, upholstery panel on inside of rear hatch doesn't stay on well, and gas springs on hatch are marginal after 22 years. Other than that, it's been a great little car and I expect to get a lot more use out of it. Handles like a go kart. Plenty of space in back for our greyhound dog.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: Economical, Dependable

Cons: Needs a 5-speed

Runs Fast; Stopping? Eh, Not So Much. — This car was fantastic when I first purchased it (new in 1988). I paid over $13,000 at the time which was bad enough, but the next year VW decided to drop the selling prices of the new models to $8,500. Overall the car was a champ, but I abused the heck out of it. It could easily attain the top speed on the odometer (120 mph) and did so once that I know of. The main drawback was that the tires were narrow and the car was very light, thus in the rain at speed the vehicle tended to brake long. It was wrecked once and suffered many ailments thereafter including a persistent incurable window leak.

Pros: Speedy and tight handling.  Looked great even sitting still.

Cons: Long braking distance; costly repairs ($57 for the plastic hubcaps); everything black on the car tended to fade quickly.

I own the above pictured wagon. This car is/was simple, cheap, and nearly indestructable for the twelve years I drove it. I fell in love with it the second I heard it pull in to my driveway. But i was blown away when i saw and drove it! For a meek 81 horsepower (I used all of them. A lot.) and widely spaced 4 speed gearbox this little fella was light, nimble and amazingly fun to drive. Got great gas mileage too! The little 1.8 liter engines that came in these and other VWs are notoriously hard to kill and the one that came in mine was no exception. I hydralocked the engine on Christmas day by driving through a deceptively deep puddle and two years later when I took the engine apart discovered I had been driving it with two bent rods. It always started for me and never left me stranded on the side of the road. It finally died three years ago from what I suspected was a blown head gasket, but I found out, after a full teardown, that a cat had gotten inside and sprayed my fuse panel years before. I miss this car and cant wait to get it back on the road!

Power Ranked 1991 Audi 90 better.
"Its got a 20v 5 cylinder with 165 hp. The only thing better than that is the 20v turbo that came in the C4 URS cars."
Handling Ranked 1991 Audi 90 worse.
"Its a toss up between the two. I actually think the audi handles better because of the quattro, but it feels heavier in the bands and less connected to the road (feel) partly due to the Foxs lack of power steering and light weight. It felt like a go cart. "
Looks/Style Ranked 1991 Audi 90 worse.
"I have a strong bias toward wagons dontgetme wrong. The b3 sedans are gorgeous, but theres something about the two-door wagon that gives me the butterflies."
Front Seats Ranked 1991 Audi 90 better.
"Two words. Heated leather."
Back Seats Ranked 1991 Audi 90 better.
"Theres just barely leg room for a child in the wagon. Any adult passengers I had in the back were uncomfortable. The 90 seats 4 adults comfortably."
Cargo Capacity Ranked 1991 Audi 90 worse.
"Mine is a wagon. Fold down the seats and fill er up. Dont expect to get a 4x8 sheet of plywood in it, but compared to the 90 its no contest. I have a smallish sub box and 2 amps in the trunk of my 90 and maybe enough room for a paper grocery bag or two if Im lucky. Reason being is that the b2/b3 chassis Audis had a 15 gallon fuel tank wedged in the trunk over the rear axles (I assume for traction). "
Value Ranked 1991 Audi 90 worse.
"It cost a scant $900. In great condition no less. The audi cost $2300."

1988 Volkswagen Fox GL Wagon Review
says:
Not the speediest car. But its drivetrain configuration gives it good ground clearance and even mild off-road capability even while the low slung seats gives it a sport feel. Alas, only a 4 speed while it has power begging for another gear on the highway. That was the most frustrating thing about it. A higher gear would even potentially make for better gas economy. I had no problems with body or trim and the hatchback has lots of space. If I could find a good one cheap I would buy it.
