Fuel-injection mania swept the F-Series in 1988; as of this year, carburetors were discontinued for this line entirely. The 1988 Ford F-150 came off the line with fuel-injected 5.0 liter Windsor V-8 engines, 4.9 liter straight-six with fuel injection, and the whopping International Harvester 7.3 liter diesel V8.
The 88 Ford F150 was the first to ship with a five-speed manual transmission, which improved the pickup's off-road versatility. Automatic transmission also came as a standard choice.
Trim lines for the 1988 Ford F150 were the XL, XLT, and XLT Lariat. Extended-cab supercab and 2-door cab setups, as well as short-bed and long-bed models, added to the variety offered to buyers of the 88 Ford F-150. The solid durability and reliability of this workhouse truck made it a great choice for farm and ranch; its rugged 4-wheel drive lent it popularity with off-roaders. Tuners especially love the solidity of this classic muscle truck.
You'll have to trade off fuel efficiency for size and power with the 1988 F-150, though; best-case scenario for mileage would be 18 highway, 14 city.

A Tank and just as reliable. Performance: As good as a naturally aspirated inline 6, 4.9L, is gonna get with 4 tons of truck to pull. Build Quality:PERFECT. 21 years later she hasn't needed a thing. Appearance: It's 21 years old man, plus its got that standard ford fade. Cost of ownership: Gas Mileage, 10 mpg... Insurance, dirt cheap. Fun Factor: You can go anywhere in it, I love owning the road with my beast. She's light enough to maneuver reasonably well and with 31" worth of offroad tire no parking space is inaccessible.
December 7, 2009love this truck will definatley be keeping this one has great performance quick accerlation and great stopping power no squeals even from the power steering pump this truck is awesome to drive even puting in through the worst mud it has the balls to make it through

November 5, 2009performance-blow your doors off. build quality-strong as hell and you cant kill a straight 6 . appearance-its an 88 what do you want? cost-$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ sink hole in gas but you pay very little fixing problems with it!! fun factor- anywhere you want to go....and i mean anywhere
August 15, 2009After being owned for nearly 21 yrs the build quality and durability has been very good and parts are still readily available from most parts outlets and the aftermarket. I've driven all of the newer models and they are much better than what I have, but I wonder how well they will hold up 10,15, 20 yrs down the road. My only gripe with it is lack of power even though I have upgraded the engine some (MAF conversion, headers, exhaust). I kinda wish it had the 351W when I tow heavy loads so I make the best with what I have. Gas mileage isn't that great 13-15 mpg at best.
September 30, 2009I got this pickup from my grandpa for my first pickup. It runs good when it is cool. When you turn it off after it gets hot it wont start again. I am not sure why but it is annoying. The tranny is starting to go out as well.
November 11, 2013Performance is very good. Has the same motor as the old 90's model crown vict. Only a 2wd though but has a possi rear so makes it fun to drive through mud. Got 31/10.5's on it right now in the back and 29/9.5's up front.
April 28, 2011this truck runs great having trouble with age dryrotting rubber and paint stuff like that but very reliable and has tons of power not the quickest truck but definently can and will run over a honda civic at the line

April 20, 2008This truck was ok It never let me down but it never really impressed me either. It did drive nice down the road pulled alot of wood with it so thta wasnt to bad i might own another one maybe
