1987 Volkswagen Fox Preview summaryImage

A Brazilian import, the Volkswagen Fox hit the U.S. shores for the first time in 1987. Looking like an elongated Rabbit, the Fox came as either a base two-door sedan and four-door GL sedan or the unusual two-door wagon. All front-wheel drive, the different models were powered by the same 1.8-liter, 4-cylinder, 81-hp engine and 4-speed manual transmission. An automatic was not an option with the Fox.

The 1987 Fox was definitely not a speedster, nor was it particularly attractive, but it was an affordable, practical car with plenty of room for passengers, and good storage space with the wagon. Owners agree it is a good starter car because it handles well, fits a lot of friends, and gets good gas mileage.

Like any Volkswagen, the 1987 Fox seems to last forever, particularly the engine, which used Fox buyers are amazed still runs quietly and efficiently. Other good things mentioned about the Fox are its tight handling and responsive manuevering, its affordability, and space. Bad things mentioned include a lack of acceleration power and its plain looks.

I had in Edmonton I paid $250 for this 87 fox with 220,000kms it was badly rusted on the sides but the floors had no rust. This was not one of Volkswagens nicer models but the four speed standard was fun to drive, I drove the supreme hell of this vdub for 4 months and it never once let me down. I drove it to the scrap yard the day I flew home to Cape Breton from Edmonton.Mar 07, 2008
