1986 Volkswagen JettaReview

Fun As Hell! — Car always starts up first thing in the morning with little trouble, Acceleration is decent although you don't expect much from such a small engine. Handling is incredible and has no problems going around even the tightest turns at relatively high speeds. It is surprisingly rust free for a car from the 1980s and still has the original engine, although I did replace the transmission. It gets probably about 28 mpg and all I really have to do maintenance wise is change the oil regularly. It is a very fun car to drive and I often get thumbs up from people who see me driving. Primary Use: Commuting to work Pros: Handling, european style, gas mileage Cons: Not much ![]() Looking for a Used Jetta in your area?CarGurus has 10,616 nationwide Jetta listings starting at $2,000. |

1986 Volkswagen Jetta — low speed but gives it good power, corners good but strut bearings go easy, brakes last forever....reverse gear rattles abit because it was used when we changed it over to a standard. floors last good in them and lots of space inside. Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.) Pros: Rims, Stereo Cons: low sped so it revs high on the highway |

Overall Great Car — I like my 1.8 5 speed, with a nuespeed racing adjustable cam shaft & sprocket and a set of headers, with a ported and polished machine matched and balanced head and short block it brings it to 175 horsepower , this cars like a little go cart. Pros: great car to trick out & easy to work on! Cons: not all autoparts cary parts for this car |

Another Project Car... — Small car, lightweight, and it is very reliable. We're talking 250,000 miles on one engine reliability. Heck, VW even has a 500,000 mile club for those make it that far...pretty awesome.
Pros:
Reliable Cons: expensive to repair |

375,000 Miles On Original Engine — This car was built very well. As long as you can keep up with maintenance, it will last you for a very long time. I had 375k when my car left me on the side of the road. It was the clutch cable, and I didn't know... ($8 part) comfortable, reliable. Only car that could take whatever I could give it... Pros: Great gas mileage, reliable, efficient Cons: Police suspect whether or not you have insurance... |

Sweet — Sweet torque, Its a non-turbo diesel, loud , gutless 120km/h top speed more horsepower than a ride on lawn mower, more torque than the average cavalier, makes for fun sliding in parking lots across alberta in winter. had skid plates, tough car, 475000 km, not burning oil 300 km a tank. 30$ fill, buying back from friend. rebuilding engine, painting it. either ford 302 or cummins b4, Pros: tough as s*** Cons: power low, torque high. |

I Will Always Love Volkswagens Because Of This Car — This was the best car I have ever had! The handling was tight, it had great acceleration, and a good turn radius. I hated to get rid of this car! When I traded it in, it was going strong with almost 200,000 miles on it! This was a very solid car in every way. Pros: Great power, performance, trunk size, cabin room, interior very durable. Cons: The exhaust needed to be re-hung about every 6 months or so, and I went through a lot of brakes (that could be a driver issue, though...) |
