Fun to drive, great dashboard and gauges - good looking and I loved the orange lighting at night, excellent push button shift on the fly 4WD, great for NY snowy winters, adjustable rear height, absolutely beautiful styling compared to today's cars. It was a GL-10 wagon - baby blue with chrome wheels (not very common) with raised white letter tires and chrome on various place around the car.
Air conditioning died and the car wasn't that old and the car had the weirdest habit of blowing the muffler, every time I floored it to get on the highway. After the third muffler, I stopped flooring it to get on the highway. Thankfully, I didn't travel on the highway where it always seemed to happen, often.Aug 28, 2012

this car was awesome, minus electrical fires. bald tires but still the most capable off road car i've had. looking for another. it was so rusty i'd lose things through the floor, metalic green with bright yellow wheels. very stylish!Jul 06, 2010

it great for only having 70 hourse it style is good it practily take anything, if you like to feel the road this is the car it is a fun car to drive it only get at most 25 mpg Aug 05, 2009

Benefits tremendously from a carburetor swap with a Weber unit. brakes are adequate for the job handed to them.
build quality is early japanese, i.e. parts last but are thin and therefor break when pushed to its limits.
its ugly as sin, but it doesn't cost much to drive.
It has a stickshift with 4wd and a selectable low range. What this does is ties the front and rear drivetrains together via a center locking coupler inside the transmission. kind of like a center differential or a transfer case in conventional trucks. Although the low range is only a 20% reduction versus the 400% you often get with conventional 4wd systems, it does enable you to get enough torque from the flat four to power the little car out of most situations.

The Subie was incredibly tough it's reliability was unquestionable. The performance was what you'd expect from a tiny four cylinder, but it loved to rev high all day. The rack and pinion steering felt every pebble, as well as, the tires gripping and slipping. It was pretty fun to drive; I've gotten at least two feet of air while hitting a hump in the road, and it kept on going. Jan 07, 2009

I have a Subaru Wagon GL 1984 4WD with 4 low, in very good shape, F/E even laether seats, runs geat in and off road, with a great stereo It´s a classic!
I can tow a small trailer with a motor bike and go to the motocross races and I can reach places that only strong 4 wheelers can go, every budy get amazed.
I use to do paragliding and also I can climb to the mountains when we go to fly, it´s a very nice, reliable carDec 11, 2008

Car Value for 1984 Subaru Wagon DL with 53K miles
I just purchased a 1984 Subaru Wagon DL with only 53K miles. This is a CO car with no rust and still looks showroom new. I asked my insurance company to insure it for $10K and they said the best they can do is $3600. That is a lot less than I paid. Any idea on how I can get evidence that a car like this is worth more than $3600?

I need to replace my low beam on my 1984 Subaru GL wagon
I need to do this soon to avoid getting stuck with a fix it ticket I can't afford to pay. I can't afford a mechanic either, and it seems like something I should be able to do myself. How do I remove the old one to install a new one? It appears to be old school where the entire fixture is the lamp itself, so it's not a matter of replacing a simple light bulb like in my later model cars. Need answer in a hurry! Thank you!

new battery, all fuses checked good in fuse box on drivers side dash, all wires are clean of corrosion. Acts like I don't have a battery
