Pontiac G6 History

The OSA, the Oprah Seal of Approval is supposed to guarantee you instant acceptance and overwhelming consumer response by the American public.  That's what GM was hoping for when it decided to unveil its Pontiac G6 mid-size sedan on Oprah's show in the now famous audience giveaway in 2004.  Of course, there have been Oprah-approved stunts that backfired -- see Tom Cruise and James Frey for comment.
But Oprah certainly generated notoriety for the car that replaced the Grand Am in the mid-size market.  Initially only offered in 2005 as a sedan with a single V6 engine, the Pontiac G6 decided to broaden its appeal in the form of a coupe and hardtop convertible and an array of I4 and V6 engines starting in 2006.  Their aim was to return to Pontiac's performance roots, but add some of the luxury features and styling of top-selling European cars at a more affordable price.  Though not exactly economy cars in terms of pricetag, the G6 does get decent gas mileage and even the base sedans come loaded with a lot of goodies.
The G6 convertible boasts one of the longest hardtop roofs in production, for a true open-top experience, and the innovative Panoramic roof option features three louver-like folding panels with a tilt-up panel, allowing you to set the roof in four different positions.  Another innovation was electronic steering rather than hydraulic, although this proved to be not so successful, and Pontiac is in the process of reinstalling hydraulic steering across the line.
It remains to be seen whether the G6 can hold its own against the foreign luxury competitors.  Though winning awards from JD Powers and recommended by Consumer Reports, the G6 has languished, and the marketing campaign fizzled after Oprah.  Overall, most owners are pleased with the G6, saying the engine is fast and the handling sporty.  They love the hardtop versatility and the interior comfort and standard features.  Most complaints focus on cheap plastic parts and poor rear visibility.
