The 2005 model year was a transitional one for the Mercedes-Benz E320. For most of the E320 vehicles, it would be their last year in showrooms, as most were about to receive an engine upgrade to a 268-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 engine (compared to the current 221-horsepower, 3.2-liter V6). As a result, the vehicles would be redesignated as the E350 line (in keeping with the Mercedes tradition of naming its vehicles after their engine size).
At the same time, Mercedes reintroduced a diesel engine to the United States (after a five-year absence) in the form of a fuel-efficient, 3.2-liter CDI (common-rail direct injection) diesel engine that produced 201 horsepower. The diesel is not only super-clean (meeting stringent European emissions standards), but also pushes the E320 from zero to 60 faster than the standard engines do.
Standard features for the E320 included a five-speed automatic transmission equipped with the Touch Shift feature, which enabled the driver to upshift and downshift by nudging the shift lever left or right. This gave the driver the option to adjust the car's performance based on driving conditions.
Other features included anti-lock brakes, traction control, and the Electronic Stability Programming (ESP) anti-skid system, as well as the automaker's TeleAid emergency communication and assistance program.
The 2005 E320 was also equipped with leather seats with power adjustment in the front, a multi-zone automatic climate control system, dual front and side airbags, power windows, power exterior mirrors, cruise control, and an AM/FM audio system with a CD player.
Options included Dynamic Drive seats that adjusted automatically to support the driver under heavy cornering, a twin sunroof with power sunshades, and a smart cruise control system that automatically adjusted the vehicle's speed to maintain a set distance from the car it followed.
A Sport Package with special wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, and a multi-function steering wheel was also available.
Many drivers were quite effusive about the E320, praising its performance, ride, handling, styling, interior features, and even its gas mileage, especially for the diesel-powered model. Some drivers thought the optional navigation system could be complicated to operate, and others had minor quibbles with the car. But for the most part the E320 scored well with drivers.
