CarGurus' 2001 Saturn L-Series Review

Despite its stylistic shortcomings, the 2001 Saturn L-Series continued to focus on safety and performance.  Changes from 2000 included optional front and rear curtain airbags, a larger 15.7 gallon fuel tank (up from 13.1 gallons), and a center seat belt in the back row.  As for semantics, the L-Series added 4 new colors to the lineup.  In addition, Saturn restructured the names for the 5 trims.  Consumers could now choose from the L100, L200, and L300 sedans, as well as the LW200 and LW300 wagons.
Otherwise, Saturn maintained the same formula from the previous year.  The 100 and 200 trims use a 2.2 L, 135 hp I4 engine.  In addition, these lower grade trims get you 24 mpg in the city, 33 mpg on the highway.  The 300 trims use a 3.0 L, 182 hp V6 engine with standard 4 speed automatic and get you 20 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on the highway.  All trims seat 5.  Cargo space in the sedans held steady from the previous year at 17.5 cubic feet while it increased to 33.5 cubic feet in the wagons.
Overall, 2001 Saturn L-Series owners say that they appreciate Saturn's continued commitment to value.  As with other Saturn models, reviewers would like to see a more stylish exterior and interior.  Engine noise also occasionally pops up as an issue.  Despite these lingering concerns, those who do not mind Saturn's conservative updates and no-frills approach will like this solid midsize option.
