CarGurus' 2006 Mazda MX-5 Miata Review

Mazda gave its popular MX-5 Miata roadster a complete makeover for 2006. Upgrades included a slightly larger (and heavier) vehicle with more interior room, an expanded lineup of trim packages, and a more powerful engine.

The MX-5 Miata was available in entry-level Club Spec and Base versions for 2006, as well as in higher-end Touring, Sport, and Grand Touring trim packages. All were powered by a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produced 170 horsepower (up 28 horsepower from the previous year's standard engine). The Club Spec, Base, and Touring packages came with a five-speed manual transmission, while the Sport and Grand Touring packages received a six-speed manual. A six-speed automatic transmission was available as an option on the Touring, Sport, and Grand Touring versions.

Standard features for the Miata included power windows, dual front and side airbags, a tilt steering wheel, a CD player, and anti-lock brakes. All but the Club Spec model came with air conditioning and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Touring, Sport, and Grand Touring packages added power door locks and steering-wheel-mounted controls, while the Grand Touring added leather seats, among other options. All came with a convertible top.

The Miata's responsive handling and sportiness were especially popular with drivers, who also liked the roadster's quickness, interior design, and easily operated drop-top. However, gas mileage could have been better, some drivers noted. What's more, the Miata's new design received mixed reviews, with some liking the new styling and others finding it disjointed.
