CarGurus' 1996 Chrysler Cirrus Review

The continued with two available trim levels in 1996.  The lower priced LX replaced the 2.5 liter V-6 with a new DOHC 4-cylinder.  Horsepower dropped from 164 to 150 as a result.  The V-6 could now be added to the LX as an option, but it was standard equipment on the LXi.
The LXi was positioned as the upscale Cirrus, due to added standard features like leather seats and options like the premium audio system and sunroof.  The LXi was the faster of the two trims, but fuel economy suffered slightly due to the larger engine.  Both models were front wheel drive sedans, using a four speed automatic transmission.  A firm sports-focused suspension system carried both cars.
Despite its higher sticker price, the LXi was subject to  many of the same mechanical and electrical problems that LX owners had reported.  Common problems for both cars included the transmission, brakes, and steering pumps.
