Water in Backseat

Asked by Jed Aug 08, 2019 at 05:08 PM about the 2004 Pontiac Bonneville SLE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Just bought a 2004 Pontiac Bonneville SLE and I noticed
that the battery under the back seat, was almost 1/4
submerged in water! I was shocked because I had just
driven it but all the electronics and lights were functional.
Im taking it to a mechanic tonight but was wondering if
anybody whose had this experience could offer any
suggestions! Thanks!

You have a leak that allows rain water to enter the battery compartment and collect. It won't affect your "electronics" or lights until the water reaches the top of the battery and causes a short between the terminals. First thing to do is to get the water out. Then do some detective work to determine where it is getting in. Could be a rusted section of the battery box, could be a bad seal/cover on the compartment, but you can probably find it. When you do its location and size will determine how to progress with a fix.

Use car wash to see if you can replicate the water getting in. if successful get in on a monthly membership car wash program. tape off area and go through as much as needed while peeling away at the tape. You'll find the leak eventually.

Have you ever figured out what the issue was? I currently own a 02’ BonneVille and I’m having the same issue with water in the battery base area, at first was scared it was acid and I had just purchased a soon to be doomed car, but with research I learned it is indeed not acid, but water getting in some how. Have you had any solutions?
