The best way to add four whel drive to a sixteen year old explorer is to search and purchase one that was built with it. Then take the thousands of dollars you will save trying to upgrade the one you have on restoring the one you purchased. Lets just say everything under the vehicle from the steering wheel forward to the radiator would have to come out, be modified, and returned to the proper position. Make sure you totally rebuild all the steering and suspension components while they are out of the car.

Oh, I forgot. Yes the 96 did come with four wheel drive. Although I do not know if it only came with a v8 engine or not.

The best,and cheapest-would be-find a rolled 96 4wd explorer,and do a body-swap...Install your body-on the 4x4 frame..or,as OJ said-sell yours,and find a 4x4...

If your reasoning for wanting 4x4 is to do off road work then ditch the explorer all together! they were a toy 4x4 not ment for anything serious, only good for light off roading. buy a decent 4x4 like a gmc or toyota!
