do have to slide transmission back to pull engine on 1996 nissan pathfinder 4wd ?

No not really . Wit radiator out ,you shoild be able to pull engine slightly forward enough to disengage from transmission. ...if it's automatic make sure all torque cinverter bolts have been removed .if standard transmission .you'll have to make sure you clear the input shafts which is about 3 inches more room needed .. good luck
