Steering wheel locked but starts n goesinto gear what can be done

Put the key in the ignition and turn the steering wheel in either direction as hard as you can then turn the key on. It sounds like one of the steering lockout pins is caught. This feature is included in most cars so when you park on a hill and lock the steering in one direction it won't brake free.
