Why does my 2000 Nissan Xterra quit running

Asked by Davesxterra Aug 31, 2014 at 10:11 AM about the 2000 Nissan Xterra SE 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

While driving my xterra will start to run sluggish (like running out of gas) then will stop
running completely. If I wait a few hours it will start right up as if nothing ever happened. I
can drive it a few miles then it does the same thing all over again.

I am by no means, qualified to advise on mechanical issues, but want to relay my experience with a clotted catylatic converter. It seems to be, from what research I've done, a pretty common thing with this type vehicle. Just a thought, trying to help, and welcome comments.

Some say it COULD be the "crank position sensor"... I am unsure about this, but I replaced all of the above including the fuel pump relay and still it doesn't run more than maybe 3-5 minutes even at idle... the crank sensor is cheap enough about $15-20 but hard change out...

Had the same issue and as crazy as it may seem after replacing, fuel pump, crank sensor, and a few other things it turned out to be the distributor. Once I changed it the it ran just fine.
