Drive train problem

I have a 2000 Mazda (which is essentially a Ranger) B3000 4WD with a V6
engine. Whenever I engage the 4WD the light comes on in the dashboard yet
there are times it seems like the 4WD isn't engaged and the rear wheels will
spin in the snow. It doesn't happen all the time just occasionally.

Was it 4high or 4 low cause it’s gotta be in park when you engage 4 low this happened to me a couple times just like how you describe it. If you know for sure that 4 low isn’t where you were going to then this justifies my decision to stay away from gas engines with more than 80 cc.lol

It was both High and Low. I gave up and took it to the transmission shop. The vacuum lines were rusted at the spindle and the mechanic had to drill them out to replace them. Not a cheap fix but with the winter weather this weekend I had to have it. Thanks for the answer.
