tapping noise in 2004 mitsubishi eclipse gt

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I bout a 2004 eclipse gt with a tapping
sound on the passenger side of the car in
the engine bay. I assumed it was the timing
chain given the high pitched type of tapping
sound it was making. Well now my
understanding is that it has a belt which
would not make such a noise. So what
could it be? I kno its not a rod or bearing in
the crank case because the sound is just
not right for it. Any clue on what it could be?
O and only does it at an idle. It stops
immediately as it revs up. any clue to thhis
problem guys?

Does it sound like its tapping under the valve covers? If so its probably lifter tick. Common on mits cars. But if it sounds like it's on the belts side of the engine have it checked out ASAP. If sound is coming from under the timing belt cover shut it down and have repaired ASAP. A torn timing belt can make a ticking sort of sound. These cars have interference engines. This means if timing belt breaks or jumps time you will end up with bent valves. Also if you are still running the factory timing belt and are over 100000 miles then you need your timing belt, timing idler pullies and water pump replaced ASAP.
