2004 mini cooper s manual transmission will not engage

Asked by Cheri Mar 06, 2017 at 08:57 PM about the 2004 MINI Cooper S

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

While driving my car began to hesitate when
going into gear.   Shortly thereafter the car
would no longer go or go into gear.   The
rpms go all the way up, but the car will not
go.   I can shift without pushing the clutch in.
Is it just a clutch cable or the transmission?

When was the trans fluid level checked last? There is no dipstick.

I just bought the car in November. I was under the assumption that it was lifetime. Plan to check it today, now that I know better. I will get back to you on that.

The manual gearbox is not lifetime lubed. I do not think there is a dipstick. The good news is that it is very easy to drain and refill, even for a back yard mechanic. Make sure they use the approved gear box fluid. That said, it might be the fluid or it might be more, but changing the fluid is the first thing I would do. Good luck.

Wondering if you found out what was wrong with it having this same issue with my mini cooper

Mine was an 06 Cooper S 6 speed auto. The transmission had issues from new. It eventually got so bad I only drove it for very short rides and traded it away. I would have needed a new trans that cost more than the car was worth.

My 03 mini copper is doing the exact same thing . It wouldn’t go into gear but it would start . Well after looking at the clutch it hasn’t started since . Pls any input would be very much appreciated

My 05 S manual started doing this and my mechanic (suggested to me by neighbors) changed out the clutch kit and replaced my manifold cover which was broken. That took him two weeks and once I got it back the check engine light came in and my AC was blowing warm and pushing in on my clutch caused a loud screeching sound! I turned around and took it back to him! He then called to tell me that I had a fuel vacuum issue but nothing wrong with my AC and they just banged on some casing and the sound stopped! “That sound is all taken care of!” Well I picked it up day before yesterday and drove approximately 12 miles and my transmission started acting as you guys described! Then my temperature gauge shot to red, battery light came on, AC blew and the EML ! came on. Transmission lost all power! I was in tears while calling him to stress there was a major problem and he said to just check my battery connection. My battery was checked and a code pulled at Autozone. The battery was fine but the code said I had some kind of damper issue. I had it towed back to the mechanic… he called me today but I was outside cutting grass and missed his call! Sick to my stomach just thinking about what he is going to say next… really feel like some of this is in part for the lack of mechanical professionalism
