87 Dodge b150 sluggish

My 87 Dodge b150 van with the 318
carburetor it's sluggish often it starts to
back fire threw the carb no power stalls but
starts up again it's like it ant getting gas but
in the air cleaner it smells of gas gas
mileage sucks never had any power any
suggestions

Check the spark timing with a timing light and adjust via the distrubutor as necessary. You may want to rebuild the carburetor also, whether it's the problem or not it's routine maintenance
