Does my 2002 Mercury Sable have to have an oxygen sensor to run

Has holes in exhaust and I want to cut it out and
put a piece of pipe in it do I need to put the O2
sensor back in it

It will throw the computer off so air-fuel mixture will be wrong, which will affect idle and gas mileage. You will also not pass any emissions testing if you live in a state that has those.
