Asked by GuruZ34C3 Jan 04, 2018 at 11:18 PM about the 2018 Hyundai Sonata Limited FWD

Question type: General

The dark line and 'flying' notches that obstruct view when driving at night, has
been reported to NHTSA, many times.   Why isn't it mentioned in Car Gurus
reviews?

Thank you Mark, I just submitted my question to Cargurus. I've attached a photo of the dark line and notches! Will do the best I can to inform other consumers. A you tube video comin up shortly!

Tom, per your suggestion, I directed my question to the proper area. Totally silly response, kinda tells you they aren't reviewing cars with the consumer in mind! If they were not able to find any additional information, they are wearing blinders for a reason and it's not for the consumer! Here's the CYA response I received........... I have forwarded your inquiry to our editorial team and they were not able to find additional information regarding this issue. We recommend reaching out to your local Hyundai dealer with any questions regarding this problem!

I have this headlight issue also on 2018 Sonata Limited. Very distracting. When I took it back to dealer they showed me a Technical Service Bulletin from Hyundai which says this is NORMAL with LED headlights and dealer should not attempt to adjust.

Right, in my opinion, it's a 'defect' disguised as a design. This SAFETY issue of the dark line and notches has been reported to NHTSA, many times, even back to 2010. You can view the complaints at the NHTSA website. So, yes report it to the NHTSA, and also Consumer Affairs. I phoned a consumer advocate group and they suggested a youtube video, contact Consumer Reports, inform any group who reviews the 2018 Hyundai Sonata Limited. Their input was to get the the word out on every social media site possible so Consumers have the information they need to make a SAFE decision!

you can adjust the lights little bit up it will help but don't bring it too high to the extent that affect other drivers it is adjustable mechanically and simply this video will show you how , it is different hyundai model but i tried it in my sonata limited 2018 DBL and i chose the proper socket size and it worked , the black dots may still there but you can tune it at least for better road vision https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWVaWHdgB9w

The notches with the LED headlights (2019 Sonata Limited) are definitely irritating. My first car was a 1965 Ford Mustang and I've never experienced anything like this! That being said Hyundai finally put out a service bulletin that states the notches are intended to soften effecting oncoming traffic. What a poor excuse for a design flaw!!! All you can do is find a Hyundai tech that knows what they are doing and slightly raise their aim. It took me 3 tries.

Well it appears this problem is affecting everyone with the Sonata Limited. I hope you will file a complaint with hyundai.com and with National Highway Traffic Safety Adminstration (NHTSA.gov). I have contacted Hyundai Corp and talked to a person there who had me set up an appointment with local dealer. I just picked up my car this afternoon. The dealer rep drove the car, verified my complaint about the headlights but said he has a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB 18-BE-003-1) that instructs dealers not to make adjustments to the headlights. Bottom line, Hyundai still will not recognize this as a problem. All owners need to keep filing complaints with Hyundai and NHTSA. I hope that if and when someone has an accident that they sue Hyundai for some huge amount and win. I would like to see a class action suit also. Please every owner, FILE A COMPLAINT. The more we complain the better chance we have of getting someone to recognize the problem.

Just got a Sonata Limited 2019 with the exact same issue. What a pain in the ass. Calling the dealer tomorrow!

Its so funny to watch all these "internet car gurus" discuss things they don't know. That "cut- off line" is signature of all projection headlights. A well adjusted headlamp won't have any safety issue with that.
