I have a 98 ford escort zx2 and it just shut off and now it won't turn over now

Check battery voltage and connections. Have you tried to jump start it? If you can jump start it check alternator output voltage. If not 14.5 volts it's not putting out enough to keep car running and battery charged at same time.
