2017 Dodge Challenger 392 scat pack insurance

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

I’m a big mopar fan and gear head and I would like
to get a 2017 Dodge Challenger 392 scat pack for
when I turn 16, I would buy it from a salvage
auction and fix it myself at my family’s auto repair
shop and only have liability coverage for it and I will
good student discount and on my parents plan and
that stuff. Does anyone have a rough estimate? I’ve
tried to contact my local insurance agencies but
they can’t do anything until I’m 16.

Since you will be on your Parents' insurance policy they have to contact their insurance company for a quote. As far as the rest of your plan, unfortunately it's a bad idea! For a three year old vehicle to wind up at a salvage auction it will have to be wrecked very badly! Especially a high performance vehicle like you're talking about! Vehicles wind up at salvage auctions because they've been damaged to the point that the insurance company deems it a total loss. A total loss means it will cost more to fix the vehicle than it's worth. On a three year old vehicle, that's a lot of damage! Where will you get parts for this vehicle? You won't find many three year old vehicles in the junkyard. Unless they've been wrecked, burned down, or flooded. Then the parts from those vehicles won't be any good anyhow! Then there's the title issue. You will get a salvage title. You can't register or insure a vehicle with a salvage title. The title status must be updated to a rebuilt title before you can register and insure the vehicle. In some States there is much red tape that you need to go through for that to happen. For example the vehicle will have to be inspected by a representative from your State DMV. They will spend several hours with the vehicle and go over every little thing on the vehicle. You have to pay for the inspection too. You must show receipts for every part you replaced on the vehicle plus the VINs of every vehicle you bought used parts from! Good luck with that!! Having only liability insurance on a three year old vehicle is a mistake too! If you have an accident you will get nothing for the vehicle. Being 16, any accident you have will be your fault, even if it's not! I've been down that road before!! It's great that you like working on cars! So you'll be much better off buying an older model "fixer upper". Maybe something with a blown engine and or transmission that you can rebuild and enjoy. But buying a total wreck isn't the way to go! I don't want to discourage you, but do your homework and you'll see what I'm talking about! Hope that helps!! Jim

Just liability will probably be the better part of 4 or 5 grand a year and probably a lot more for such a car driven by a 16 year old. Unless you have very good impulse control you really should not buy such a car until you are a lot older.
