Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2017 ford fusion energies (HPEV) was sitting
at a parking lot for a year.
Once we connect the jump cables all
electricity comes on but the car won’t start.
It show a message “press break to start” while
when you press the break the break light do
come on but the car still do not start.

We did not try to charge the high capacity
battery (assume it should start the gas engine
if the large battery is empty or dead)

Any ideas?

On many newer vehicles the computers must remain powered up at all times, no exceptions. Leaving the vehicle parked for a year allowed the battery to go completely dead. Now you have to be towed to the Dealer to have the computers flashed (reprogrammed). Hope that helps! Jim

My quick guess is, it must have gone into security/theft Mode. I believe most mechanics have the more advanced OBD 2 scanners that can program it out of Theft Mode. But easiest, cheaper things first. I would First try using a thicker gage jumper cables. If thicker cables won't start it, I would try another stronger battery. But, yes, you do have to apply the brakes when starting that vehicle, at all times. Good Luck, Cisco
