How can you tell the difference between a battery issue vs a starter issue?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I turn the key to start, I hear several quick clicks, then nothing.  I try a few more times (same clicking) and eventually the engine turns over.  It seems to me like a starter problem, but when I called my mechanic, he said it sounded like a battery connection problem.  Any thoughts?

turn the headlights on as u start the car, if lights dim, it 'battery or the connections.........otherwise it's the starter relay...may or may not be on the starter..raise hood, trace by sound where u hear clicking.

Thanks Shedley75! After posting my question, I had a few errands to run; predicated upon whether or not my car would start (and keep starting). It did start, however sluggishly. When I got home and read your answer, I took your advice and went back out to the garage to see if the lights would dim when I turned over the engine and sure enough, they did. Thanks so much for your help!

My 03 g35 coupe does the same thing. I replaced the battery a month ago brand new the lights and everything comes on. When it first happened the car act like it didn't want to start but later that day I tried to start and it tried to turn over but it didn't. Any suggestions on what it could be.
