You need the motor that is 97 or newer cause the motor mounts aren't the same on older ones. You need a transmission cause the bellhousing is not the same. And you need computer & wire harness for the engine that you want to use and it also needs to be within a few years 98-02. Then you need a key programmer or take it to ford to program your keys to the new computer. I've done this a few times. As long as you stay within a few years of the year of the truck it WILL work.

I have a 2003 ford ranger 3.0 flex fuel and I’m getting ready to put a 4.0 from a 2001 explorer in it and noticed that the motor mounts from the explorer don’t fit in the ranger do I need to get mounts for a 2003 ranger with a 4,0 and also will the battery-starter harness from the 03 ranger work on the 01 explorer 4.0

You need the motor mounts that bolt on the 4.0l from a ranger. If your 3.0l has the 2 bolts that stick up at a staggered bolt pattern then I know for sure you can use 99-03 mounts off of the ranger 4.0l block. As for the starter wires from the 3.0. The wires will work But you need a different starter that goes to the 4.0l

Ok the ranger mounts for the 3.0 the 2 studs that stick up are not staggered and I have the doner explorer I took the starter harness out of it but we’re the alternator wire bolts on to the fuse box is a bit different and also there is a plug under the abs pump with 5 wires and the plugs are different from the ranger to the explorer

I would use the starter wires originally from the ranger. You can use the whole engine wire harness from the 3.0 and put it on the 4.0l. You might have to extend some wires. I know you would have to change the crank sensor plug from the 3.0 wiring to the 4.0l crank sensor plug. And if you are using the sohc 4.0 you would need to change the plug in for the camshaft sensor also. I've got a 2000 ford ranger that had a 3.0 and I used a 91 4.0l pushrod style and used the complete 3.0 wiring and computer since the fire order is the same. Runs great. Had to use the injectors from the 3.0 cause of the flex fuel and the old injectors ohm out different.

So I can use the harness that is on the 4.0 and the pcm that goes with that engine tho right and when I plug it in to the truck harness everything in the dash will work fine

I have a 2003 ranger and trying to get the 4.0 from the 2001 explorer in it and the motor mount brackets don’t line up any idea what year brackets I need to make this work

So if I use the 3.0 harness on the 4.0 should I use the pcm from the 3.0 as well or should I still use the pcm from the 4.0
