I'm paying way too much on car insurance ($292/mo living in NY)

Asked by DON'T LOOK AT Aug 22, 2017 at 10:57 PM about the 2001 Hyundai Elantra GLS Sedan FWD

Question type: General

My mom has been with Geico for the past 9 months and she's been paying
$292/mo for her used 2001 Hyundai Elentra. On her account it says her vehicle
total 6 Month Premium is $1,747.20 and the car has no comprehensive or
collision coverage. She's been driving for about a year and a half now with
only 1-2 tickets while driving. I don't know a thing about car insurance so I
came here seeking help. Should she look else where for cheaper insurance or
find ways to lower her current insurance? What should she do? We live in NY
btw. Most of the people I know who live in NY too pay a little over $100 and
some under $100. It makes absolutely no sense for her to be paying that
much. She is also planning on adding a second car on her insurance.

Without knowing her driving history it's hard to say what sort of rate she should be paying, but holy **** that rate seems high. Shop around. I don;t know what else she can do to lower her rates except shop around and stop getting tickets. The car's history can also affect insurance rates, such as having a salvage or rebuilt title on a former totaled vehicle or one that had flood damage.
