Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2000 ford explorer will stop running if I turn on the lights. Batt and Alt are good, had them checked out. I was told I may have a hard ground somewhere. The ford has a 5 speed and 4.0 engine. This all started after the radio quick.
Help Please.

Oops again... pull them out and check them including your relays. Make sure you check all fuses under engine hood, under driver passenger side kick panels and as to relays, ive done this; take one thats similer in numbers and diagram and swap but then replace after you test to see if car /suv continues with issue. I would do that to the engine relay could also be starter relay or fuel pump relay. If still continues with a test light, test for power to these fuses or relays making sure that they all have power before and after you turn on lights there is power going to these parts of vehicle. Its basically process of elimination, unless you do have a check engine light on also. And if thats the case check the vehicle with an OBD2 reader and see what it tells, then do pros. Of elimination. Hope that helps. Good luck n God Bless

If the electrical system goes out and the engine kills when you turn on the light, then there is a short somewhere within the lighting circuit which is grounding out. See what else is on the circuit with the lights and radio and begin unplugging them one at a time. Then plug them in one at a time, then check if the engine kills. When it does kill, the problem is within that accessory.
