Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have 13K miles on my 2016 CRV, and my last oil change was at 9800 miles.  Does it need to be changed now?

I recommend every 5,000 miles if you want it to last a long time.

This is taken directly from Honda. Thanks for your input Ed. 1. Oil Change Rules: -Car models from before 2008 should have their oil changed every 3,000 miles. -Car models from 2008 or a few years after should get it changed every 5,000-7,500 miles. -Cars made several years after 2008 should be safe to get it changed every 7,500-10,000 miles. -If you drive aggressively you might want to change it sooner rather than later. -Dealing with a lot of stop and go traffic can reduce the amount of time between necessary oil changes. -Cold weather shortens the lifespan of your oil, so be vigilant during the winter months. -For newer car models, your service warning lights on the console will let you know when it's time. -The owner's manual is a readily available resource valuable oil change guidelines for your vehicle. -Always get your oil checked when you bring your car in for a service about every 6 months just to be sure!

Honda has implemented a high pressure fuel injection system in the 2017 and later model years. The increased pressure can cause gasoline to bypass the cylinder rings and end up in the crankcase, diluting the already thin (0W-20) motor oil. The telltale signs are (1) smell of gasoline on the oil dipstick and occasionally (2) a rising oil level over time. The damage is done incrementally over tens of thousands of miles. Change oil + Filter every 5000 miles !

Honda spokesman Chris Martin says abnormal oil dilution remains “extremely rare, especially outside of extremely cold weather areas.” The problem occurs when unburned fuel slips past piston rings and mixes with engine oil in the crankcase. ... Honda says short drives and extreme cold temperatures exacerbate the problem.May 24, 2019

Please explain the presence of a gasoline smell in the crankcase oil, and the gas/oil dilution problem that Honda freely admits exists.

I know this is a few months old but don't listen to Ed. He doesn't know what he is talking about. There is a fuel dilution issue with Honda CRVs and it is due to exactly what the original poster described. Ed please do some research before spewing misinformation and random facts to try to make yourself seem educated on all things cars. Owners should be aware that this issue exists and let their dealers know ASAP if they suspect this issue. It will be easier to get coverage after warranty expires if you have brought this issue forward early enough.

So. your first day on this site and youre nothing but a bitch session ragging on one of the best advisors here. Eds helped me several times and by his rating has helped tens of thousands. Who have you helped other than your own sad little ego. Go back to Facebook and Instagram where your kind of sick anonymous poison is normal.
