Rattling Noise While Accelerating

Asked by Erfanul Jan 27, 2017 at 06:53 PM about the 2004 Honda Accord LX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I hear a slight metallic rattling noise coming from the front of my car when I accelerate. The sound disappears after reaching 35/40 mph. I don't hear the noise if I take my feet off the gas pedal. A local auto shop told me that it was due to a broken heat shield, but repairing that did not stop the noise. What can be the cause of this problem?

Is the engine pinging? Try a higher octane gas.

Here is a way to help in diagnosing this sort of thing put the car up in the air on a lift or jack stands and having someone "drive" the car with someone listening underneath. You can simulate a load (acceleration) by applying the parking brake for a short time. You should be able to locate the sound that way.

Thanks everyone for your kind suggestions. The engine is not pinging and the check engine light is not on. Can it be due to problem in the cam shaft belt?

I have the same issue with my 2010 CRV. I Put STP, the first day was good, but it came back. I guess it could be fuel pump not pumping enough gas/dirty/low octane gas! Taking it to dealership tomorrow.

Accord, I'm driving right now, doing the same thing. Seems to be related to shifting, I'm thinking higher rpm of 1st gear is the issue for mine, maybe yours too. Transmission problem maybe. This accords makes a grinding noise, then stops after 45km/hr.

I checked it out with the dealership, the car is "losing/burning" oil. Hence, the monitoring system that takes an oil sample indicates 60% of oil life left. However, if do an oil check, there is not enough oil! So, I just add a 1/2 quarter of oil and the noise disappears! I am getting to the habit of doing an oil change sooner and not relying on that monitor.

I was told today that it is a VTC Actuator which apparently cost roughly $950 to replace. It is apparently similar to the cold weather start up grinding noise in some Honda's. There is not yet a recall on this as they don't really have a fix that works.

I have the same problem as Soyaboy above. Have you had any luck figuring it out?

Why are there always 10 posts of people saying “I have the same problem’? Every website about cars?

My mechanic charged me 420.00 to replace the sepentine belt -with no luck. Still grinds. It started out intermittent and now scrapes and rattles throughout exceleration. I am interested to see this happens with several models of Honda,

2010 Honda CRV and rattles when in park and under ac load. Also does rattle when accelerating slowly. It’s the idler pulley failing.
