If the 2016 is a new purchase, it's under warranty. Why does a 2016 need an upgrade anyway? Check with the phone company and see if they can supply you with an answer. It just may be the phone.

I’m having problems with my 2015 Terrain Bluetooth as well. Nothing seems to work.

1- Open your cellphone Bluetooth (no cable). 2- Click on the Bluetooth Icon on vehicle screen, then Click "Pair" . that's all ..

I'm having trouble with the bluetooth in my Terrain. The dealer and GMC would like for me to believe that the software just causes the radio (out of nowhere) to forget. They also want to sell me a $1,000 radio replacement.
