You can ask other owners about the heater core on the Ranger. It could be a problem but we don't much about them on this site. Did the cores or the pipe fittings leak?

Is it clogging or leaking? Had a 1993 with a six cylinder and auto, and currently a 1994 with 4 cylinder and manual, both same body though (extended cab) and neither with heater core problem. If it clogs, bypass the heater core before having cooling system flushed, then replace it and see if that helps, and if it leaks try a different manufacturer for the part or shop for repair. If you replace it yourself, be careful because the part could be flimsy being aluminum and placing it (replaced one in a 94 f series, can do through glove box if careful because the odd movements needed although suggested dash is removed) can be tough.
